Stephan was among the league leaders in the holds category last season, but he regressed a bit statistically thanks to a rough final month that saw his 2.78 ERA and 1.18 WHIP balloon to 4.06 and 1.30, respectively, by season's end. The 28-year-old's pitch usage was nearly identical to 2022, as he tossed his mid-90's fastball nearly half the time along with a devastating splitter (28 percent usage) and inconsistent slider (24 percent). Stephan's splitter was one of the best in the league, as the pitch induced a 49.1 whiff percentage that was 7th-highest for that pitch type, while limiting opposing hitters to a mere .152 batting average. If he elects to throw his splitter more often in the future, his strikeout rate would likely climb back over 30 percent. Gets surgery, hits 60-day IL
Stephan underwent season-ending surgery Wednesday to repair the torn UCL in his right elbow, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. The Guardians placed him on the 60-day injured list Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Though it's not clear if Stephan underwent Tommy John surgery or an internal bracing procedure on his elbow, he'll still be ticketed for a 12-to-16-month rehab and recovery. His move to the 60-day IL freed up a spot on the 40-man roster for right-hander Tyler Beede, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Columbus.

Stephan emerged as a reliable setup man for the Guardians after incorporating more split-finger changeups into his 2022 arsenal. He threw the change 27% of the time as a complement to his 96.5 mph 4-seamer (47%) and slider (25%) and produced the second-highest whiff rate for that pitch type at 54%. This helped yield a 96th percentile whiff rate overall, while 52 of Stephan's 82 strikeouts came via the changeup. The 2017 third-rounder was particularly sharp last April, as he didn't give up an earned run or walk over 10 innings. He scuffled in May, but produced a 2.17 ERA and 1.18 WHIP with 64 strikeouts over 45.2 innings the rest of the season. Stephan led Cleveland with 20 holds, but also added six wins and three saves and figures to be one of Emmanuel Clase's primary setup men again in 2023.
