Blankenhorn elected free agency Monday after being outrighted off the Nationals' 40-man roster.
ANALYSIS
At this point in the calendar, Blankenhorn is unlikely to land a minor-league deal with another organization before the season ends, but he'll get a head start in finding his next employer ahead of 2025. He was optioned to Triple-A Rochester on Aug. 20 and later designated for assignment after he slashed .129/.156/.161 over 32 plate appearances in 13 games with the Nationals.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2017
Blankenhorn could carve out a utility role this season with the Twins. He's passable at second base and third base but doesn't excel anywhere in the field. He's not considered a top prospect at age 23, but hit 278/.312/.474 with 18 home runs and 11 steals in 93 games at Double-A in 2019 and played one game with the Twins in 2020. He'll likely provide depth and move between Triple-A and the majors this summer.
Blankenhorn does not have a clear defensive home -- he is passable at second base and third base but doesn't excel anywhere. However, his bat could carry him to some sort of big-league role if the Twins need depth. He hit .278/.312/.474 with 18 home runs and 11 steals in 93 games at Double-A. He'll likely begin the season at Minnesota's alternate training site.
Blackenhorn, taken 80th overall in the 2015 draft, showed promise with a .900 OPS and nine home runs in rookie ball before holding his own at Low-A with a .774 OPS at age 19. He'll need to improve his command of the strike zone, as he had just a 5.4 percent walk rate in rookie ball and strikes out a little too often. His early power could make him a top prospect at third base if he improves at Low-A in 2017.

Could get look in September
3BWashington Nationals
August 31, 2023
Blankenhorn is a name to watch as the Nationals prepare for September call-ups, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Blankenhorn has made only 31 plate appearances at the major-league level -- none in 2023 -- but the 27-year-old boasts an .883 OPS with 23 homers and 75 RBI in 107 games this season for Triple-A Rochester. He's been especially hot since the beginning of August and Washington could use some outfield help for the stretch run.
