Begins coaching career
The Low-A St. Lucie Mets announced Monday that Joseph has been named the team's hitting coach, signaling the end of his playing career.
ANALYSIS
Joseph's transition into coaching will mark the end of a 12-year professional career that began in 2009, when he was a second-round selection of the Giants. He ended up spending two seasons in the big leagues with Philadelphia, slashing .247/.297/.460 with 43 home runs in 880 plate appearances. In addition to his stints in the Giants and Phillies organizations, the 29-year-old also saw minor-league action with the Rangers and Red Sox.

Joseph’s rookie 2016 stint seemed to line him up for big things in 2017, but he disappointed at the plate end eventually lost out on playing time to Rhys Hoskins. Joseph's rate stats fell dramatically, and he just barely managed to exceed his homer total from the previous season despite logging nearly 200 additional plate appearances. His torrid rookie pace was bound cool, but the extent to which it did was still surprising; Joseph posted nearly the exact same batting eye weaknesses (6.2 walk rate) with less contact (12.4 swinging-strike rate, 24.2 strikeout percentage). His heavy lean on flyballs will suppress the ceiling for any help in batting average, and the 26-year-old’s 2018 role will likely be dependent on where Hoskins plays: his time in the outfield should open up at least a part-time role for Joseph, but possibly only against left-handers. At least Joseph will be in much lower demand.
