Pirates fans did not have much to cheer about in 2020, but Brault quietly put together a nice season. The lefty finished with a 3.38 ERA and 1.20 WHIP over 42.2 innings. He allowed BAs of .149 and .152 on his two primary pitches (four-seam fastball and changeup, respectively), leading to a 4.4% opponents' barrel rate. Brault only sits about 92 mph with his fastball and has never averaged even a strikeout per inning in a big-league season. Further, he's far from a control specialist, with a career 11.4 BB% leaving him with little margin for error. Brault has to work around traffic and hope for weak contact, which puts him largely at the mercy of the BABIP Gods (.243 BABIP in 2020). To be fair, Brault has gotten that weak contact consistently throughout his career, and the home park helps, but in the absence of swing-and-miss dominance, we should not expect him to emerge as more than a streaming option.
Brault was pressed into duty as a starter more last season due to injuries in the Pittsburg rotation -- more than he really needed to work. He has a high-maintenance delivery that is tough to repeat and leads to control issues on the mound. He has an 11.3 BB% for his career at the big-league level and his 7.5 K-BB% is dangerously low for any pitcher, let alone one working in the starting rotation. Brault would be better served working as a long man in the bullpen in shorter stints. If he doesn't get the control fixed, his time in the majors will not be long. He has one more year of options, so the club could send him down to work on things, but for now, he is projected for a slot in the Pirates' rotation. Don't make him part of yours.
Brault served as a swingman/long reliever for the Pirates in 2018, totaling 91.2 innings across 40 relief appearances and five starts. While he experienced a sizable jump in strikeout rate (from 14.2% to 19.9%), that was offset by a big jump in walk rate (from 8.6% to 13.8%). He allowed home runs at a higher clip despite a jump in groundball rate as all of his secondary pitches waned in effectiveness, per FanGraphs. Brault only throws 92-93 mph with his fastball and rarely gets swings and misses out of the strike zone. He can get same-handed hitters out but right-handers have combined for a .279/.372/.460 line against Brault so far in his career (541 batters faced). The Pirates would probably be better off deploying Brault as a more of a true specialist, limiting his exposure to righties.
Brault failed to impress in his 2016 debut major-league campaign (4.86 ERA) but was given another look with the Pirates this past season. Though a vast majority of his time was spent with Triple-A Indianapolis, the southpaw was able to compile 34.2 innings with the big club, including four starts late in the year. He improved marginally from the year prior but failed to display any skills that would make him worthy of future mixed-league consideration. Even in a relief role, Brault failed to miss bats, leading to an underwhelming 14.2 percent strikeout rate for the season. The 25-year-old should be in line for some more major-league innings in 2018 -- especially if the Pirates decide to sell off assets and move towards a rebuild -- but he currently doesn't factor into the equation as far as the rotation goes.
If guts and guile were fantasy categories, Brault might be a first-round pick. Unfortunately, the lefty's fastball (91 mph average) and breaking pitches are average at best -- he lacks anything remotely resembling a strikeout pitch. Opponents hit .313 (in 33.1 innings) against the 24-year-old rookie. Brault tore through the low minors in 2015, but the lack of a put-away pitch bodes poorly for his chances at sustained success as a starter. Of course, 2016 represented his first taste of big league action, so it's possible he improves. The Pirates lack starting pitching depth and it appears Brault is in line to take regular turns in the rotation, but most in the fantasy realm will want to take a wait-and-see approach.
