Rest-of-Season Projections
Agrees to one-year deal
Kingery agreed to a one-year, $770,000 contract with the Angels to avoid arbitration Thursday, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Kingery hasn't appeared in the majors since 2021, but the Angels acquired him from the Phillies on Nov. 1 and added him to the 40-man roster three days later. He should have a chance to compete for a bench role in the middle infield during spring training.

Kingery tested positive for COVID-19 during summer camp, something the Phillies will hope accounts for the entirety of his severe struggles last season. Only one player who came to the plate at least 120 times had a wRC+ lower than his 37, the result of his .159/.228/.283 slash line. He homered just three times and didn't attempt a single steal. A .200 BABIP accounted for some of his struggles at the plate, but a low BABIP should be expected when you simply don't hit the ball hard, as Kingery's average exit velocity dipped from 88.4 mph to 85.3 mph. Statcast does think he deserved far better than he got, though it's not as if his .221 xBA or .406 xSLG were particularly exciting marks. If the 26-year-old's struggles can be entirely attributed to the virus, he could be an interesting bounceback pick, though excitement should be muted even then, as previous seasons weren't anything special.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Pushing for another chance
Kingery has positioned himself to potentially be promoted by the Phillies with 13 homers and an .804 OPS in 54 games at Triple-A Lehigh Valley this year, per Adam Aaronson of The Philly Voice.
ANALYSIS
The 30-year-old inked a six-year, $24 million extension in March of 2018 prior to making his MLB debut, but he hasn't seen action in the majors since 2021. Kingery has a career .667 OPS in 325 big-league games, and he's found more power at Triple-A early in 2024, having already matched his homer total from last season. Philadelphia's poor injury luck would likely need to continue to get worse for Kingery to be promoted in the near future, but he's played well enough to put himself in consideration for a roster spot should the situation present itself.
