Gets minor-league deal from Cubs
McWilliams signed a minor-league contract with the Cubs on Monday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
McWilliams was out of baseball for a while but impressed enough in the Mexican League and Dominican Winter League to earn a minor-league deal. The 28-year-old has never pitched in the big leagues and has always had control problems, but he struck out 74 over 67.2 innings from 2021-22 after focusing on being a reliever.

2021 Fantasy Outlook
An eighth round pick in the 2014 draft, McWilliams bounced through three organizations over his first seven seasons as a pro, but as yet he hasn't received a big-league call-up or even had much success above Double-A. The 25-year-old right-hander was part of the Rays' 60-man roster last year though and even saw time on the taxi squad, and the Mets' scouts liked him enough that they signed him to a one-year major-league deal this offseason. At 6-foot-7, McWilliams fires his mid-90s fastball from an imposing angle that gives hitters difficulty when he's able to locate it, and he adds a slider that flashes plus and a work-in-progress changeup. With Marcus Stroman back in the fold and Carlos Carrasco coming over from Cleveland, rotation depth is less of a need for the Mets than it was when McWilliams signed in November, but he could still get a look in the bullpen if he shines in the spring.

Option for promotion
The Cubs are expected to add a pitcher to the big-league roster Friday, and McWilliams could be an option to have his contract selected, per Mike McGraw of the Chicago Daily Herald.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander was briefly retired from baseball but joined Chicago on a minor-league deal in January, and he has an 18:4 K:BB across 11 innings through four outings with Triple-A Iowa. An eighth-round pick in 2014, McWilliams previously stalled out at the Triple-A level but could soon get the opportunity to make his MLB debut.
