The Mariners non-tendered Haggerty (Achilles) on Friday, Ari Alexander of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old played 27 games between the Mariners and Triple-A Tacoma before he suffered a torn Achilles in May, which cost him the rest of the season. It's unclear exactly how long Haggerty will be sidelined, but he'll likely be unavailable for at least the first month of the 2025 campaign.

Stat Review
How does Sam Haggerty compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • BB/K
    Walk to strikeout ratio
  • BB Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a walk.
  • K Rate

  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Hard Hit Rate
A measure of contact quality from Sports Info Solutions. This stat explains what percentage of batted balls were hit hard vs. medium or soft.

Haggerty was a key cog for the Seattle bench in 2022 while posting a .738 OPS and playing all over the field, but he struggled in his limited action to begin the 2023 campaign with a .190/.292/.238 slash before being demoted to Tacoma. He was much more effective after a promotion in August, however, as he registered an .852 OPS while earning regular playing time in September. The 29-year-old doesn't possess much power and he has never hit above .256 in a season, but he does show a solid approach at the plate and he's stolen 23 bags over the last two seasons despite playing in just 135 games in that timeframe. Haggerty will likely be a bench option for Seattle to open 2024, and he isn't likely to see enough playing time to be considered for a roster spot in fantasy leagues.
Haggerty began the season with Triple-A Tacoma, but strong play earned him a spot back on the 40-man roster and a few first half big league stints. Haggerty was called up for good in late June, playing through some nagging injuries including forehead, shoulder, finger and groin issues. Working mostly in a utility capacity, but also starting from some stretches, Haggerty posted a career-best .738 OPS. His biggest fantasy contribution was 13 steals in 14 attempts. Haggerty's 26.4% strikeout rate is too high for a player with a below average exit velocity and Hard Hit rate. Haggerty's defensive flexibility and speed should keep him on the Mariners as a reserve, but he'd be exposed with regular playing.
A 24th-round pick by Cleveland in 2015, Haggerty was shipped to the Mets in January of 2019 and finally got his first call-up that September. However, he did not get much of a look -- Haggerty appeared in 11 games in 2019 but only logged four PA -- and he was eventually designated for assignment, landing with the Mariners via a waiver claim. Haggerty began 2020 at the alternate site and had to wait until Aug. 16 for a promotion. Haggerty showed off his speed with two steals in his first game in a Mariners uniform, but his performance was predictably trending south when he was placed on the injured list Sept. 7 with a left forearm strain, ending his season. For now, Haggerty remains on the 40-man roster. At close to 27, he looks likely to max out as a utility player.
