Garcia was one of a handful of Detroit pitchers who dealt with injuries in 2022. The righty went down with shoulder soreness in late July and never returned. Before the injury, Garcia recorded a 4.41 ERA and 1.04 WHIP with 48 strikeouts across 51 innings. He split his time between the rotation and bullpen, making eight starts and eight relief appearances. Garcia is reportedly healthy and should have a normal spring training, which puts him squarely in Detroit's 2023 pitching equation. He'll be 25 at the start of the season and has shown enough flashes to potentially start for a team that is still searching for reliable rotation options. Eduardo Rodriguez should lead the way, and he'll likely be followed by Matt Manning and Spencer Turnbull, the latter who is returning from Tommy John surgery. Beau Brieske, Alex Faedo and Tyler Alexander are also in the mix, but none have been particularly dominant in the majors. Garcia still figures to end up in the bullpen, but he'll have more fantasy value if he's making starts and pitching well.
This player will receive an outlook for the 2021 fantasy baseball season.
The Tigers selected Garcia from the Yankees in the Rule 5 draft. The highest level he's pitched is 105.1 innings for Double-A Trenton last season so look for Garcia to spend the 2019 campaign working as a reliever in low-leverage spots. A starter by trade, he'll then likely open 2021 in Triple-A. With Casey Mize and Matt Manning on the way, Detroit can afford to be patient with Garcia. The 22-year old righty is still growing into his 6-foot-3 frame so his low 90s fastball could pick up a tick or two. He also throws a curve and change with a developing cutter. Garcia's delivery is inconsistent, but that's something he can work on with the Tigers coaching staff during the season since he won't be counted on for many innings. There's plausible mid-rotation starter potential, but don't expect it to manifest until late 2021 at the earliest, rendering Garcia a speculative dynasty pick.
