Rest-of-Season Projections
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Castro showed enough flashes in his age-23 season in 2022 that he seemed a reasonable bet to emerge from a group of similarly young and vaguely interesting Pirates and establish himself as a regular. Instead, his 2023 campaign represented a significant step back. His wRC+ dropped from 101 to 69, and he found himself traded across the state at the deadline to a Phillies team that didn't have much use for him. He only received 32 plate appearances for his new club, grabbing three hits while striking out 12 times. Castro has now come to the plate 627 times across three big-league seasons, meaning he's had effectively one full season's worth of opportunities, and it's hard to see him as anything more than a bench player. A respectable barrel rate (7.6%) has helped him to 22 homers, but he's struck out 27.9% of the time while slashing .219/.292/.380 and has added just six steals. His path to fantasy relevance in 2024 likely involves him failing to win a bench spot in Philadelphia and getting traded to a team in desperate need of infield help, but even then, there's no guarantee he plays regularly. 2023 Fantasy Outlook
Only those with skin in the game were paying close attention to the Pirates down the stretch, and those with Castro on their fantasy rosters enjoyed a sneakily productive run to finish the season. Castro hit .247/.310/.478 with 10 home runs, three steals and a 27.5 K% in 50 games after getting recalled from Triple-A on Aug. 9. The 23-year-old switch hitter was filling in for the injured Ke'Bryan Hayes (back, shoulder) at third base and manning the keystone when Hayes was healthy. His 112.5 mph max EV and 10.2 Barrel% from 2021 were superior to what he posted last season, so we may not have seen his best yet. Castro's role for 2023 is unclear, but he enters the year eligible at second base and third base in most leagues, and he played 19 games at shortstop, so he is also eligible there on some sites. With a solid spring, Castro could be the everyday second baseman to open the season, and he has the tools to hit 20-plus home runs with 7-to-10 steals if he gets everyday work.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Looking like roster casualty
Castro does not have a locker in the Pirates' clubhouse Sunday, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Nothing's official, but Castro would appear to be on his way out -- presumably optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis -- with Andrew McCutchen set to return from an elbow injury. The Pirates appear content to roll with Nick Gonzales and Tucupita Marcano as their primary middle infielders for the time being. Castro has hit just .162/.208/.221 since the beginning of June.
