33-Year-Old OutfielderOF
Boston Red Sox
2025 Fantasy Outlook
It was not surprising to see Refsnyder hit lefties as he had raked on the short side of platoons hitting .321 against southpaws from 2021 to 2023 in nearly 300 plate appearances. What was surprising was witnessing Refsnyder hit as many homers in 307 plate appearances in 2024 than he had over the entirety of 2018 to 2023. The part-time outfielder had 1 homer in 145 plate appearances against lefties in 2023 but hit eight in the exact same number of plate appearances against lefties in 2024 by lofting the ball against them at a career-best rate. He had the exact opposite luck against righties where he did hit .267, but his groundball to flyball rate was nearly double what it was against lefties. Career years at 33 years old are rarely done, but even less frequently repeated. Boston liked what they saw enough to exercise his 2025 club option as he makes the perfect partner for Wilyer Abreu in an outfield platoon. Ideally, Refsnyder remains in a short-side platoon, but that also severely limits his fantasy viability in 2025. In short, 2024 was a fun surprise but it isn't happening again. Read Past Outlooks

ANALYSIS
Refsnyder was a useful platoon bat for the Red Sox again in 2024, slashing .283/.359/.471 with 11 homers over 93 games, which included a .941 OPS versus left-handed pitching. Boston currently projects to be very left-handed heavy again in 2025, so Refsnyder should be busy again as a short-side platoon outfielder.

The Red Sox are pleased with Refsnyder as a depth outfielder that hits lefties well (.828 OPS in 2023) and inked him to a deal for the 2024 season. For the first time in his career, Refsnyder will not have to enter the offseason seeking a minor-league contract with yet another organization - Boston is the sixth stop. The trade of Alex Verdugo to the Yankees, along with Adam Duvall hitting free agency, means Boston's outfield has a different look. Tyler O'Neill, acquired during the winter meetings, is expected to take over in right field with Masataka Yoshida in left and one of a group that includes Wilyer Abreu, Jarren Duran and Cedanne Rafaela in center. It's unlikely that Refsnyder, who had a career-high 242 plate appearances in 2023, will be anything more than a fourth outfielder or the short side of a platoon, and both the player and team are happy with that.
Refsnyder joined the Red Sox on a minor-league contract for 2022, but he was on the big-league roster from mid-June through the end of the season (though he also dealt with a couple injuries). He did his best work against left-handed pitching with a 1.005 OPS, but he also fared well against righties (.270/.365/.427). Sample size is an obvious concern since he played in just 57 games (one short of his career high), but Refsnyder showed he's at the very least a viable candidate as a short-side platoon option. The signing of Masataka Yoshida solidifies Boston's primary outfield alongside Enrique Hernandez and Alex Verdugo, but Refsnyder should still receive some chances as the No. 4 outfielder, especially against southpaws since both Yoshida and Verdugo are left-handed bats.
Refsnyder spent the spring in camp with the Indians but was designated for assignment after failing to make their major-league roster. The Rays claimed him and gave Refsnyder an Opening Day roster spot. After slashing an anemic .167/.314/.274, Refsynder was again designated and sent to Triple-A Durham after clearing waivers. He posted a more productive .283/.357/.402 line for the Bulls but wasn't called back to the majors when rosters expanded. Refsnyder signed a minor-league contact with the Diamondbacks that includes an invitation to spring training, hoping his ability to play both corner outfield spots and all around the infield warrants a return to the majors.
Refsnyder failed to impress during his latest stint in the big leagues, posting a dismal 22 wRC+ over 98 plate appearances between New York and Toronto. He put bat to ball with decent consistency (17.3 strikeout percentage), but the quality of that contact was poor, to put it nicely. Refsnyder posted a 16.9 percent hard contact rate and managed just three extra-base hits, resulting in an .045 ISO. Only four players with 90-plus plate appearances posted lower wOBA marks: Luke Maile, Arismendy Alcantara, Luis Torrens and Chris Stewart. Refsnyder had some buzz as a prospect and he fared well in his 16-game debut in 2015, but he's done nothing but backslide over the past two years. The Blue Jays left Refsnyder unprotected at the end of the season and the Indians claimed him off waivers. It's no lock that Refsnyder will maintain his 40-man spot through the winter.
With just 16 games under his belt, Refsnyder was plugged into the starting lineup in the Yankees' lone playoff game in 2015, so it looked like he may have earned the organization's trust and a larger role in 2016. Instead, the club acquired Starlin Castro to man the keystone, and after taking some reps at third base in spring training, Refsnyder was sent back to the minors to open up the season. He ended up making multiple trips back and forth between the majors and minors. When all was said and done, the 25-year-old proved to be extremely versatile with at least four starts in the big leagues at first base, right field, second base, and left field. At the plate, he put together an impressive line in 54 games at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, but other than his ability to draw walks, that success didn't translate to the majors. With a crowded depth chart yet again, Refsnyder could face a similar fate this season as a backup option at several positions or a starter in the minors.
Refsnyder, following another impressive campaign at the Triple-A level, was given his first chance in the majors in 2015, eventually leading to a platoon role late in September and being tabbed as a starter in the AL Wild Card game. The 24-year-old posted an impressive .302/.348/.512 line in 16 games, and actually had a .385 average against righties despite primarily being used against southpaws. That the Yankees thought highly enough of the 24-year-old to start him in a win-or-go-home game bodes well for Refsnyder, who will battle for a utility role this spring. The converted outfielder has had some questions regarding his defense, but he looked more than capable at second in the majors, so he could be given the opportunity to earn a full-time role eventually if he continues his production at the plate.
The 23-year-old second baseman has put up very impressive slash lines over the past two seasons in the minor leagues, but his hit tool will have to carry him as he is lacking in the power and speed departments. Refsnyder earned a promotion to Triple-A last season after slashing .342/.385/.548 with six home runs and five steals in 60 games at Double-A Trenton. His .391 BABIP had a lot to do with that production, but he still managed to exceed expectations after leaving Trenton thanks to a less aggressive approach. Stephen Drew was brought in during the offseason to provide a short-term solution at second base, meaning Refsnyder will likely head back to Triple-A to begin 2015, but he could get the call if Drew gets hurt or struggles for another prolonged stretch.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could see time at first base
OFBoston Red Sox
April 17, 2024
Manager Alex Cora said Monday that Refsnyder, who is on a rehab assignment at Triple-A Worcester as he returns from a toe fracture, will be reintroduced to playing first base, per Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald.
ANALYSIS
The veteran outfielder has 36 appearances at first base during his big-league career, the most recent of which came in 2020 with the Rangers. Refsnyder fits in as Boston's No. 4 outfielder and should get occasional starts against left-handing pitching, and the positional versatility should help his push for playing time. However, Tristan Casas should be locked in nearly every day at first base, so the versatility is unlikely to affect Refsnyder's fantasy outlook.
