Closes curtains on career
Porcello confirmed Monday during his appearance on "The Bradfo Sho" podcast that he has retired from professional baseball.
ANALYSIS
Given that the 33-year-old didn't sign with a team following the 2020 season, Porcello's decision to confirm his retirement hardly comes as a surprise. Though Porcello's career ended on a down note with a 5.64 ERA over 12 starts for the Mets in the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign, the right-hander was a solid mid-rotation arm for the majority of his 12 years in the big leagues. He enjoyed his best season in 2016 with the Red Sox, as Porcello claimed the American League Cy Young Award that season after leading the circuit in wins (22) while posting a 3.15 ERA and 1.01 WHIP across 223 innings. Across stops with the Tigers, Red Sox and the Mets, Porcello accrued a lifetime 150-125 record, 4.40 ERA and 1,561 strikeouts over 2096.1 innings.

You can count on Porcello to make his outings as he answered the bell every time the skipper handed him the ball over the past five seasons. He has not missed a single start in that time, and even stole a Cy Young from Justin Verlander in 2016. In three of those five years, he enjoyed enough offensive support to get wins despite being rather hittable and prone to homers. The good news was that homers were not a problem for him in 2020, but just about everything else was. He adjusted his repertoire to that of a middle reliever with a heavy sinker and slider approach, and his results looked like a middle reliever. If you want to buy into his FIP being two runs lower than his ERA, do so at your own peril. He eats innings with a skill set fraught with risks. The free agent is likely to end up on a second division club where run support could be scant.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could return to Tigers
The Tigers and Porcello have discussed a reunion, according to Jason Beck and Jon Morosi of MLB.com.
ANALYSIS
Tigers general manager Al Avila said earlier this week that he was still looking for arms and that adding "at least one more starter would be ideal," so Porcello would certainly fit the mold. However, the sides remain far apart in terms of compensation. Porcello is only 32, so there is still hope for him to turn things around, but his last couple of seasons have been downright poor. He owns a 5.55 ERA over his last 233.1 innings at the big-league level.
