Past Fantasy Outlooks
2022
2021
Preciado, the centerpiece of the five-player package the Cubs received from San Diego in last offseason's Yu Darvish trade, exceeded expectations in his pro debut. He hit .333/.383/.511 with a 132 wRC+, three home runs, seven steals, a 22.7 K% and a 7.1 BB% in 34 games in the Arizona Complex League. His ability to use the whole field while logging a 23.1% linedrive rate also stood out as positive indicators. When factoring in pedigree and preseason expectations, Preciado was up there with Hedbert Perez as the most impressive international prospect in the ACL, and at 18, he was an appropriate age for the level. A switch-hitting 6-foot-4 third baseman, Preciado has a chance to grow into plus power as he adds good weight to his lean frame. There is a lot of risk here, given how much development remains, but Preciado has long been a favorite of those who have scouted him and his peers on the backfields in Arizona, and by surpassing the hype in his debut, his future appears to be very bright.
Preciado emerged as the top prospect from the Padres' impressive 2019 J-2 haul. At 16 years old, he signed for $1.3 million -- a record for a Panamanian prospect. While Preciado was in the middle of the pack in a deep Padres farm system, he quickly moved towards to the top of the Cubs' prospect rankings after being included in the return for Yu Darvish. As for his future, Preciado remains a difficult evaluation because he is entering only his age-18 season and has yet to play any affiliated ball. A switch-hitter, scouting reports reflect that Preciado can hit the ball with authority from both sides of the plate and has projectable power. Because he's likely to continue growing -- Preciado is currently listed at 6-foot-4 and 185 pounds -- he may have to move off of shortstop, but he'd likely be able to find a home at third base or in the outfield.
