Ramon Urias

30-Year-Old Third Baseman3B
Baltimore Orioles
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Urias popped 16 home runs and won a Gold Glove as a semi-regular for the Orioles in 2022. He was used in a similar role for the American League East champs in 2023, but Urias' home run output was quartered and his defensive metrics also took a major hit. Where that leaves the 29-year-old heading into 2024 is uncertain, as Urias has seemingly already been passed up by some younger, more talented infielders and the organization also has more on the precipice. At his best, Urias has been an above-average hitter with an above-average glove. His fantasy appeal looks pretty limited, though, as he doesn't stand out anywhere and is facing uncertainty about his role. Read Past Outlooks

ANALYSIS
Urias has started at third base and hit safely in both games since he returned from an ankle injury. His defense will likely be enough to keep him in the lineup on a regular basis heading into the postseason, though he's also batting a passable .259 (21-for-81) over 29 games since the start of August. Urias is at a .252/.325/.433 slash line, 11 homers, 36 RBI, 35 runs scored and one stolen base over 283 plate appearances this season.

Stat Review
How does Ramon Urias compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2022
2021
Urias produced a fairly average line last year, slashing .248/.305/.414 with 16 home runs, 51 RBI, 50 runs scored and a stolen base in 445 plate appearances. He was right in line with his expected metrics, and he played well enough to earn regular run at second and third base. Urias' future with the Orioles is likely dependent on how Gunnar Henderson settles in at the major-league level. Urias is entering his age-29 season, so there's not a lot of room for growth. His ability to make hard contact (45.1 percent career hard-hit rate) is his only real standout mark, but Camden Yards' spacious left field will likely continue to see him rack up doubles at the expense of homers. He does have versatility in his favor, which should help him maintain a regular spot in the lineup.
Urias received his first extended run in the majors in 2021 and hit .279/.361/.412 with seven home runs, 38 RBI and one stolen base in 85 games. The 27-year-old doesn't provide much upside with his power or baserunning, which combined with Baltimore's poor lineup severely limits any fantasy potential. Urias should see plenty of playing time to open the season for the Orioles and will likely need to surpass last season's production to be a worthwhile fantasy asset in 2022.
After joining the Orioles in February, Urias spent the majority of the campaign at the alternate training site, though he made his major-league debut and hit his first big-league homer. Urias has a strong contact profile, regularly recording strikeout rates below 20% in the minors. Simultaneously, he struggled to provide much pop and stole only five bases on eight attempts since reaching the upper levels of the minor leagues in 2018. Urias will be nearly 27 years old when the 2021 campaign kicks off, leaving little upside left to squeeze out of his profile. His strongest opportunity to stick in the major leagues comes from his defensive versatility, as he primarily plays at second base but is capable at both shortstop and third base. Given the Orioles' current lack of depth along the infield, that could be enough for him to earn at-bats at the big-league level in 2021.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Bigger role in 2025
3BBaltimore Orioles
October 18, 2024
According to Paul Mancano of The Baltimore Banner, Urias could claim a larger role at third base in 2025 after he posted an .819 OPS during the second half of the 2024 regular season.
ANALYSIS
The third baseman saw inconsistent playing time early in the campaign and had a .602 OPS at the end of May, but he was more involved down the stretch. Urias seemed like a non-tender candidate at one point, but the departure of some infield prospects at the trade deadline and the strong second half strengthened his roster positioning heading into 2025.
