2024 Fantasy Outlook
Marchan made his debut as a 21-year-old back in 2020, but after a three-game cameo that season and a run of 20 games in 2021, he's yet to return to the majors. Marchan was never going to be anything more than the third catcher in Philadelphia behind workhorse J.T. Realmuto and clubhouse DJ Garrett Stubbs last season, and with both big-leaguers remaining healthy, Marchan was never called on. He did, however, show signs in his age-24 season that he should have a future in the majors, even if that's only as a backup. Surgery on his hamate bone delayed his season debut until the end of May, but in 51 games for Triple-A Lehigh Valley, he hit .297/.391/.440, good for a 113 wRC+. He only homered twice, giving him a grand total of eight across his eight professional seasons, but he also struck out just 9.7% of the time, a mark that looks even better next to his 11.6% walk rate. With both Realmuto and Stubbs still around, though, Marchan lacks a path to playing time. Read Past Outlooks
Optioned to Triple-A
The Phillies optioned Marchan to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Saturday, Alex Coffey of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
J.T. Realmuto (knee) was activated from the injured list Saturday, squeezing Marchan off the big-league roster. The 25-year-old backstop owns a solid .894 OPS through 56 plate appearances with the Phillies, though he'll remain in the minors as long as Realmuto and Garrett Stubbs are both active.

2021 Fantasy Outlook
At the age of 21, Marchan got a brief call-up last season while J.T. Realmuto was on the shelf with a hip injury. The youngster did well with the opportunity, collecting four hits -- including a home run -- and three RBI in eight at-bats. Remarkably, the long ball was the first of Marchan's professional career; he had gone without a homer over 654 minor-league plate appearances. It stands to reason that the backstop isn't going to be much of a power hitter going forward, but Marchan does have good contact skills and could hit for a decent average in the majors. His contact rate has hovered around 90% in the lower levels of the minors and he has struck out in less than 10% of his plate appearances. Marchan's bat-to-ball skills and potentially-elite defense could earn him regular playing time in the big leagues, but with Realmuto back on a long-term deal, he needs a trade or an injury to open things up.
