Finds work with Seattle
Severino signed a minor-league contract with the Mariners on Tuesday and was assigned to Triple-A Tacoma.
ANALYSIS
Severino attended spring training with the Padres and accepted an assignment at Triple-A El Paso after failing to win a spot on the Friars' Opening Day roster. He performed well at El Paso to the tune of a .286/.400/.476 slash line in 75 plate appearances, but with a promotion to the big leagues not imminent, he was granted his release from San Diego last week. Severino quickly caught on with Seattle, but he'll still likely find himself no better than third on the organizational depth chart at catcher behind Cal Raleigh and Tom Murphy.

Severino had seemed in line to start at catcher versus lefties for the Brewers last season before being popped with an 80-game PED suspension shortly before Opening Day. He wound up playing just eight games for Milwaukee after serving the suspension before they removed him from the 40-man roster and eventually released him. Severino inked a minor-league deal with the Padres over the winter and he'll have a shot to crack the Opening Day roster. The 29-year-old has decent pop for a catcher and a pretty good track record of hitting southpaws. While that could make him somewhat useful for San Diego, he's probably not going to be relevant in fantasy leagues.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Moving on from Baltimore?
Adley Rutschman could be Baltimore's Opening Day catcher in 2022, Keith Law of The Athletic speculates, meaning Severino may look for a starting gig elsewhere.
ANALYSIS
Rutschman, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 draft, raked at Double-A and Triple-A this season, so the Orioles are likely to deem the 23-year-old ready to go. Severino is on a one-year contract this year, and if Rutschman does indeed get the promotion, the former may see if he can find a starting job with a different club in free agency. The 28-year-old is slashing .242/.304/.383 this season across 108 games.
