Thriving with new organization
Perez, who signed a minor-league contract with the Diamondbacks on July 31, is slashing .500/.556/.733 with five-extra base hits through his first eight games with Triple-A Reno.
ANALYSIS
Arizona brought Perez aboard in late July with the expectation that he would provide catching depth to the upper levels of the minors, but a promotion to the big leagues isn't out of the question while the Diamondbacks' top backstop, Gabriel Moreno (adductor) remains on the injured list without a definitive return date. For now, the Diamondbacks have been leaning on prospect Adrian Del Castillo as their new No. 1 catcher and have gotten strong results from him thus far, but if he or backup Jose Herrera were to fall victim to an injury, Perez or Andrew Knizner could be next in line for a call-up.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2021
2019
Perez paired a career-high 93 plate appearances with a career-worst 35 wRC+ in 2020. His struggles convinced the Rays to part ways with him in the offseason, though he has since found a new home in Pittsburgh. In 228 major-league plate appearances, Perez has accrued a 28.5% strikeout rate with just a .093 ISO. Some small glimmers of promise may linger under the disappointing numbers, however, as Perez was regarded as an athletic prospect with ability as a hitter. That athleticism has come through defensively in varying degrees, as Perez has improved his ability to control the running game, though his framing still lags behind. While unlikely, it's possible a step forward with his bat is next as Perez is entering his age 29 season. Jacob Stallings is locked in as the Pirates' primary backstop, though it's a near certainty that Perez will surpass his previous season-best 93 plate appearances.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Demotion on horizon
Gary Sanchez is expected to be promoted by the Mets on Friday, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post, which could result in Perez being sent back to Triple-A Syracuse.
ANALYSIS
Perez had his contract selected by the Mets last week and has appeared in two games, going 4-for-7 with a double and a run scored. The 30-year-old has realistically done all he can to retain his spot in the majors, but his poor track record at the highest level likely outweighs the strong two-game performance. Francisco Alvarez is currently "dinged up" but isn't likely to require a stint on the injured list, and it's unclear if New York is willing to carry three catchers on its active roster.
