Makes full-time move to pitcher
Gettys has working out exclusively as a pitcher during the Red Sox's minor-league camp, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Gettys was an outfield prospect of some repute when he was selected by the Padres with the 51st overall pick in the 2014 first-year player draft, but his outlook has dimmed considerably since he reached the Double-A level for the first time in 2018. He began dabbling between hitting and pitching for the first time during the 2021 season, and after he slashed a lowly .201/.271/.349 (65 wRC+) in 166 plate appearances for Triple-A Worcester, Gettys will turn his focus entirely to the mound. Given his limited experience as a pitcher, expect Gettys to start the season with one of Boston's lower-level affiliates.

2017 Fantasy Outlook
There is no denying Gettys' impressive raw tools, but a caution sign still hangs above the profile. Offensively, he is at least a plus runner with above-average raw power. Defensively he has the arm for right field and the speed for center. It is a tantalizing package. If he brought just an average hit tool to the table, Gettys would be a surefire top-100 prospect, and some might push him as high as the top-50. However, most evaluators still project him as fringe/average hitter at best, with some going as far as to say he projects as below average. He took advantage of a half season in the California League and posted a BABIP over .400 across two stops, so his 2016 numbers look impressive. Owners in deeper dynasty leagues should be shopping Gettys aggressively, as this may be the last time to cash in before he gets exposed against upper level pitching.
