Cast off 40-man roster
The Mets designated Williams for assignment Sunday, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Williams was removed from the 40-man roster and 26-man active roster after going 7-for-33 at the plate (.212 average) with a solo home run and a double in his 17 games with the Mets following his May 31 call-up from Triple-A Syracuse. He had served as the Mets' fourth outfielder for much of his three-week run on the roster, but he dropped to fifth in the pecking order when Albert Almora was activated from the injured list Saturday.

Joining the hapless Orioles on a minor-league deal could have been the opportunity Williams needed to finally break through as a big-league regular after he'd played a total of just 76 games in parts of four seasons in the majors. That wasn't meant to be, however, as he wasn't called up until September and added just 11 more games to his ledger. The 28-year-old performed capably in 121 games for Triple-A Norfolk, hitting .308/.371/.477 with 18 homers, but his 117 wRC+ wasn't good enough to demand an earlier callup. With 87 major-league games now under his belt, Williams owns a .286/.325/.382 line, so he would certainly not look out of place on a big-league bench. With defense that has graded out poorly, though, even the Orioles decided to remove him from their 40-man roster. He remains with the organization and could get back into the mix with a good spring training.
