2025 Fantasy Outlook
Rodriguez didn't break camp with the Rays, but was recalled early in the 2024 campaign to serve a low-to-mid leverage role for Tampa Bay. After a few weeks, the 28-year-old righty was optioned to the minors, where he excelled for Triple-A Durham (1.09 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, 28:6 K:BB over 24.2 innings with five saves). Upon rejoining the Rays bullpen before the All-Star break, Rodriguez saw plenty of high-leverage work, racking up two wins, two saves and nine holds the rest of the way. This came with a 1.93 ERA and 0.89 WHIP over his final 28 innings, giving him a leg up for a role in the Rays' 2025 Opening Day bullpen, especially since he has no options remaining. Rodriguez hasn't struck many batters out over 69 big-league innings, but did post a 12.6 K/9 over seven seasons in the minors. There is certainly room for improvement in that category along with upside for 20-plus saves-plus-holds over a full season in the majors. Read Past Outlooks
Not getting save chances
Rodriguez allowed one hit and struck out two across a scoreless inning to record a hold Thursday against the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander has seen plenty of high-leverage usage since rejoining the Rays bullpen just before the All-Star break, so he was viewed as a logical candidate to get save chances when Pete Fairbanks (lat) hit the injured list. However, Rodriguez hasn't gotten a save chance in his last seven appearances, while Thursday's hold was his first in that span. He's pitched well since Fairbanks was sidelined, posting a 2.53 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 9:2 K:BB over his last 10.2 innings, but manager Kevin Cash's matchup-based approach seems to have cut Rodriguez out of the closer mix.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Rodriguez was a darkhorse candidate for saves last spring, but began the 2022 season in Triple-A. While in the minors, he suffered a strained right elbow last April and the injury shelved him for four-and-a-half months before he was able to return. Rodriguez recorded a save in his first appearance with Chicago in late August, and he'd tally three more over the final month for a career-high four saves in just 14 appearances. However, the 26-year-old has yet to pitch more than 17.2 innings during a season and he has nearly as many walks (21) as he does strikeouts (24) through 31.1 big league innings. Any optimism for a late-inning role to begin 2023 dissipated after he was designated for assignment in January.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Has competition for closer role
Rodriguez may yield save opportunities to Codi Heuer going forward after the latter recorded a perfect, two-inning save Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Rodriguez allowed runs in three of his first five appearances after his trade deadline call-up, but he has bounced back with three consecutive scoreless frames and lowered his ERA to 4.50 in six total innings. His 10.5 K/9 certainly fits the closer role more than Heuer's 5.4, but both righties boast impressive stuff. With their focus now exclusively on the future, the Cubs may give both Rodriguez and Heuer opportunities with what few late-game leads they hold for the remainder of 2021.
