Option turned down by Yankees
The Yankees declined Trivino's (elbow) $5 million club option for 2025 on Sunday, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander hasn't seen a big-league mound since 2022 and spent this year working his way back from Tommy John surgery, so it's not a surprise New York wasn't willing to commit to a $5 million salary. Trivino had a 4.53 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 67:24 K:BB in 64 outings between the Yankees and A's in 2022.

Trivino began the year as the A's closer, but was out of the role by mid-April thanks a bout with COVID-19 that cost him several weeks. The right-hander wasn't exactly performing well on the surface, but an elevated BABIP (.389) that was over .500 at one point inflated his ratios. Looking beyond his surface stats, Trivino posted a career-best strikeout rate (11.2 K/9) and walk percentage (9.6%) while inducing ground balls at a 53% clip. More strikeouts thanks to a new slider that Trivino threw 24% of the time as his second most-utilized pitch. The slider was responsible for 32 of his 67 strikeouts and carried a mere .109 BAA with an outstanding 47% whiff percentage. The 31-year-old reclaimed Oakland's closer job for about a month before he was traded to the Yankees, with whom his numbers were much improved (1.66 ERA, 1.29 WHIP). Trivino is likely to remain an important part of the bridge to the ninth inning in 2023.

Possible trade candidate?
With the Athletics expected to trim payroll this offseason, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Trivino is one of several veteran players who could be traded this offseason.
ANALYSIS
Trivino is owed a fairly modest $2.9 million next year, but the reliever is 30 years old and could bring back a decent prospect haul, so Oakland may listen to offers. He saved 22 games this past season and posted a solid 3.18 ERA.
