Returns to mound in Double-A
Triple-A Round Rock reinstated Funkhouser (shoulder) from the 60-day injured list Saturday and assigned him to Double-A Frisco.
ANALYSIS
Funkhouser made his 2023 debut for Frisco on Saturday, tossing a scoreless inning against San Antonio while working around a hit and a hit batsman. The 29-year-old right-hander previously appeared in 70 games in the majors with the Tigers in 2020 and 2021, but until Saturday, he hadn't pitched in affiliated ball while recovering from shoulder surgery. He'll likely need to enjoy sustained success at Frisco and then Round Rock before potentially getting a look in the Texas bullpen.

2022 Fantasy Outlook
Funkhouser started the season with Triple-A Toledo but was recalled before the Mudhens started playing games. After posting a 7.27 ERA in 17.1 innings during the pandemic season, Funkhouser was earmarked for a multi-inning, low-leverage role, replacing the injured Derek Holland. However, he opened the Tigers eyes with a 3.46 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in his first 13 appearances. Funkhouser began to see higher-leverage action, going on to collect 10 holds and a save. The catch is his walk rate ballooned during this stretch as he registered a 1.48 WHIP over his final 47 appearances. Funkhouser will likely continue to provide bullpen depth, but he lacks the strikeouts and ratio protection to carry much fantasy allure.
