Stewart signed a minor-league contract with the Royals on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
The deal presumably includes an invitation to major-league spring training. Stewart didn't pitch anywhere in 2022 after missing a large portion of 2021 with an elbow injury, although it's unclear whether he wound up having surgery. The right-hander holds a career 4.88 ERA over 21 appearances -- nine starts -- at the big league level.

The 2013 first-round draft pick has underwhelmed in his career but finally had a promising season in 2018. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to build upon that momentum in 2019. Stewart made several trips to the majors as a sport starter and for bullpen depth with the Twins but had a lackluster 6.39 ERA. His Triple-A performance wasn't much better with a 5.14 ERA despite an improved 7.9 K/9 from 2018 thanks to a walk rate that nearly doubled (4.4 BB/9). Stewart signed a split contract with the Orioles -- meaning he can be optioned to the minors -- and may need to spend time at Triple-A in 2020 before he's entrusted with a major-league role.
The 2013 first-round draft pick has underwhelmed in his career, but showed some progress at Triple-A last year with a 3.98 ERA based on improved control (2.7 BB/9) and inducing ground balls (57.3 %). He surprisingly got a callup to the majors and did better than many expected. He had just a 5.9 K/9 and 4.4 BB/9, but again kept the ball on the ground (53.5 %). He also showed decent velocity (92.6 mph average fastball). While he wouldn't appear to have much upside given his spotty track record and lack of strikeouts, he could work his way into a bullpen role or add value as a long reliever.
Despite his pedigree (No. 4 overall pick in 2013) and the impressive grades from scouts on some of his pitches, Stewart has been unable to miss bats at a level fit for a future mid-rotation starter. He started to change that narrative a little at High-A (20.8 percent K rate), but then he finished the season with just 47 strikeouts in 92 innings at Double-A. Stewart could still be a big-league starter, but there are no signs that he'll miss enough bats to be an exciting fantasy option.
Stewart, the fourth overall pick in the 2013 first-year player draft, saw his prospect status dip last season due to lack of strikeouts and mediocre command. Stewart had a 3.20 ERA at High-A Fort Myers, but just a 5.0 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9. Stewart has a mid-90s mph fastball, but it was his second season with a lackluster strikeout rate. While he keeps the ball down (54.8% GB%), opposing batters make too much solid contact against him. Stewart is just 21 years old, but will need to improve significantly to thrive at higher levels.
Stewart, the fourth overall pick in the 2013 draft, is regarded as one of Minnesota's top pitching prospects after a promising first full season of professional baseball. Stewart had a 2.59 ERA for Low-A Cedar Rapids and more than held his old as a 19-year-old. While his strikeout rate wasn't spectacular (6.4 K/9), there's reason to think it will improve since he hits 95 mph with his fastball. He also kept the ball on the ground with a 52 percent groundball rate and only four home runs allowed in 19 starts. Right shoulder inflammation ended his season in August, but Stewart is expected to be ready for spring training. He'll likely begin the season in High-A and could be on track to reach the majors as early as 2017.
Stewart, the fourth overall pick in the 2013 draft, had a strong professional debut, posting a 1.35 ERA and a 24:4 K:BB in 20 innings spanning seven appearances between Minnesota's two rookie-league teams. He was viewed as the top high school pitcher in the draft and an outstanding athlete, as the high school quarterback turned down an offer to play football at Texas A&M. He has a fastball that can reach the high 90s, which is the kind of velocity the Twins have been lacking in their system. Stewart was limited to rehab work during the Twins' instructional league due to a sore shoulder, but is expected to be healthy in the spring. He could begin his first full season with the Twins' Low-A Midwest League affiliate, but he seems unlikely to emerge in the big leagues before 2016 at the earliest.
