February 16, 2021
Hoese was invited to join the Dodgers' major-league camp Tuesday, Eric Stephen of SBNation.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Hoese will get to work out with the team's big-league coaching staff for a few weeks but is unlikely to join them on a permanent basis this season. The 25th overall pick in 2019, Hoese projects to hit for at least a decent amount of both average and power, but he's only played 41 games as a professional due to last year's canceled minor-league campaign.

2020
Hoese was a divisive draft prospect, as he broke out in a big way as a junior at Tulane but was old for his class and didn't perform like a potential first-round pick in prior seasons. After the Dodgers selected him with the No. 25 overall pick in 2019, Hoese had a strong pro debut, most notably logging a 13.6 K% in 22 games at Low-A. He reportedly impressed at the alternate site but underwhelmed during the fall instructional league, so org. and class mate Michael Busch has passed him in the team's bat-first prospect hierarchy. Now 23 and turning 24 in July, Hoese is entering a bit of a prove-it year. He will be sent to an age-appropriate level (likely Double-A) with the hope that he forces another promotion before season's end. He will need to develop a plus hit tool, which remains possible, and could unlock 25-homer power. Given his age, his stock is down a bit due to reports from instructs.
After hitting five HR in his first two years at Tulane, Hoese exploded as a junior, hitting .391/.486/.779 with 23 HR in 58 games, en route to the Dodgers selecting him with the 25th overall pick. His offensive onslaught continued as one of the oldest hitters in the AZL, but his production fell from otherworldly (187 wRC+) to a notch above league average (108 wRC+) in the Midwest League. His spray chart was elite at both stops, and he actually struck out less at Low-A than in the AZL -- making contact at an elite clip should be one of his hallmark strengths. The 6-foot-4, 200-pound third baseman is a below-average runner and middling defender, so his bat will need to carry him to an everyday role. He has a chance to develop a plus hit tool with above-average power. Hoese's lack of a lengthy track record is concerning, but it is difficult to bet against the Dodgers' player-development staff at this point.
