Merrell was traded to the Royals from the Athletics on Sunday in exchange for starting pitcher Homer Bailey, Joel Goldberg of FOX Sports Kansas City reports.
ANALYSIS
The A's are chasing down a playoff spot and needed a back-of-the-rotation starter, so Merrell goes to a new organization after being picked 33rd overall in 2017. Merrell was hitting .246 with a .631 OPS for Double-A Midland this season, but he's been a better hitter than that in his brief minor-league career and was viewed as one of the fastest players in Oakland's system, per Matt Eddy of Baseball America. Merrell will report to Double-A Northwest Arkansas to begin his time with Kansas City and could end up filling a super-utility role at the MLB level if he develops the way the Royals think he can.

2018 Fantasy Outlook
A college shortstop with 80-grade speed, Merrell landed in Oakland with the No. 33 pick last year, receiving a slightly under-slot $1.8 million bonus. Given his speed and above-average hit tool, if there were an industry consensus that he would stick at shortstop, he would have come off the board earlier. That's not to say he will definitely be moving to second base or center field, but it is a possibility. Merrell finally started to tap into power as a junior at the University of South Florida, and hit a couple balls over the fence in the New York-Penn League, but will likely top out at around 10-to-15 homers annually in the big leagues. He could hit for a high average, but we won't get a good sense of his upside in that department until he reaches Double-A, likely in 2019. That said, as a college hitter with impact speed and a chance to stick in the middle infield, Merrell should be valued as a top-25 dynasty-league asset from the 2017 draft class.
