2025 Projections
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Akin continues to excel as a multi-inning option out of the bullpen for Baltimore, turning in his finest season to date in 2024. The southpaw's 24.9 K-BB percentage ranked 18th among qualified relievers, while his 0.94 WHIP across 78.2 frames was a career-best mark by far. Akin has yet to be afforded regular high-leverage opportunities, but he did tally six holds last year and could further ascend the Orioles' hierarchy as the team's top bullpen lefty if he repeats last season's success in 2025. Avoids arbitration
Akin agreed to a one-year, $1.475 million contract with the Orioles on Thursday to avoid arbitration, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Akin is coming off of a 2024 campaign in which produced a 3.32 ERA and 0.94 WHIP with 97 strikeouts, six holds and a save over 78.2 innings in 66 regular-season appearances. The left-hander appears to be geared up to operate in a significant role out of the bullpen with the Orioles again in 2025.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2021
2017
Akin's move to the bullpen worked for both player and team in 2022. He covered 81.2 innings in 45 appearances (one start), posting a 3.20 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 77:20 K:BB. Those numbers are very solid for a multi-inning reliever, but that role doesn't lend itself to much fantasy value, as he had just two saves, three holds and a 3-3 record. The southpaw made some strides by keeping the ball down better (average launch angle of 7.9), which trimmed his HR/9 to 1.1. He also cut down his BB/9 to 2.2 from 3.8 a year before, when he worked mainly as a starter. With big-name prospects on the horizon, Akin's unlikely to enter the rotation in 2023 barring a massive bite from the injury bug. In deeper fantasy formats, he may have some appeal as a ratio stabilizer with decent strikeout potential, but the lack of saves won't change.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Will remain in rotation
Akin has earned wins in consecutive outings and will remain in the rotation for the remainder of the season, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
The lefty has simplified his game by pitching exclusively from the stretch and it appears to be working, as he's allowed two earned runs with 11 strikeouts in 12 innings over his last two starts. Manager Brandon Hyde said he wants to keep starting Akin to see how he handles the Orioles' strong competition in September, which includes plenty of games against the Red Sox, Blue Jays and Yankees. Akin's 6.90 ERA through 75.2 innings this season is far from pretty, but it's already down from 7.92 a couple weeks ago and will continue improving if he maintains his recent run of success.
