June 15, 2023
Wong was traded from the Mariners to the White Sox on Thursday, Mike Curto of the Tacoma Rainiers broadcast team reports.
ANALYSIS
The return for the Mariners was unclear, though the move opened up a needed roster space for Triple-A Tacoma. Wong has recorded 109 plate appearances this season with Tacoma and maintained a .315/.422/.500 line. However, the 28-year-old has earned only 18 big-league plate appearances during his career and will likely remain organizational depth with the White Sox.

2015
After seven seasons in the minors, Wong got his first major-league cup of coffee in 2019, notching 18 at-bats with the Rays and Angels. He didn't do much in his limited playing time, collecting three singles and striking out six times. A better picture of Wong's abilities can be derived from his time in the minors, where he is a career .287 hitter over 3,052 plate appearances. That's a passable average, but it doesn't come with much in the way of counting stats, as Wong has totaled only 32 home runs and 299 RBI in 718 minor-league games. While the 24-year-old stole as many as 15 bases in the minors, his speed is average at best, and his career 65.6 stolen-base percentage doesn't portend success at the major-league level. Wong's ability to play multiple positions may earn him a roster spot with San Francisco, where he signed in early November, but he's unlikely to rise above the role of a utility player.
The former fourth-round pick in 2013 spent all of last season at Low-A Bowling Green, where he was able to hit for average and little else. He is the younger brother of Kolten Wong, and while they both man the keystone and are similar in stature, Kean does not share his brother’s upside. In 454 plate appearances at Low-A, Wong slashed .306/.347/.370 with two home runs and 13 steals (in 20 attempts). The best argument for Wong developing into a big league regular is that he could have a similar makeup and hit tool, and will work as hard as possible to maximize his abilities, but even then he would likely be just a second division player. He is just 19 years old, so there is a chance he could develop some power down the line, but his distant ETA and low ceiling combine to make him unappealing in most dynasty leagues.
