2025 Projections
Retires from baseball
Dirden announced his retirement from baseball Monday.
ANALYSIS
Dirden seemed on the precipice of the majors following a breakout season in the Astros system in 2022, but he struggled the last two years, including slashing just .177/.239/.241 at Double-A Biloxi in the Brewers organization this season. The 26-year-old will now move on to the next phase of his life.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
An undrafted, fifth-year senior out of Southeast Missouri State in 2020, the year of the five-round draft, Dirden spent 2021 at Single-A and High-A and 2022 at Double-A and Triple-A. He is older (turns 26 in July) than the typical legitimate prospect who will open the year at Triple-A, but at least Dirden's biography excuses his age to some extent. He hit 24 home runs in 124 games last season, and his 32.8% groundball rate at Double-A was stellar, but he struggled (28.2 K%, 73 wRC+) in a 32-game run at Triple-A to close the year. Dirden is a decent athlete, capable of playing all three outfield spots, and he went 12-for-15 on stolen-base attempts. A lefty hitter, Dirden would probably get platooned (.999 OPS vs. RHP, .782 OPS vs. LHP) if he hits enough to earn a regular role in the majors.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Remains in roster mix
According to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com, manager Dusty Baker said Sunday that Dirden could "bang his way" onto Houston's Opening Day roster, though the skipper also noted the outfielder isn't on the 40-man roster.
ANALYSIS
Dirden has made a strong case during spring training with a 1.043 OPS in 42 plate appearances in the Grapefruit League, but it remains to be seen if it's enough to warrant being added to the 40-man roster. The 25-year-old was promoted to the Triple-A level last August and endured some struggles with a .703 OPS in 32 games, and the Astros could send him back for a bit more seasoning to begin 2023.
