Donaldson announced his retirement from professional baseball Monday on The Mayor's Office podcast.
ANALYSIS
Donaldson had said earlier this offseason that he would like to play one more season if the right opportunity presented itself, but evidently that offer never came. Injuries limited the 38-year-old to only 50 games in 2023, and he managed just a .678 OPS since the start of the 2022 season. However, Donaldson was one of the better players in baseball for several years, making three All-Star teams and winning one American League MVP. He'll finish with a career .261/.358/.489 batting line with 279 home runs over parts of 13 big-league seasons.

Traded from the Twins to the Yankees in March, Donaldson finished below league average by wRC+ in 2022 after nine seasons of well-above-average production. By the end of the campaign, Donaldson was drawing the ire of Yankees fans, especially as he limped to a .172/.333/.207 line in the postseason. His walk rate declined, his strikeout rate jumped six percentage points from 2021 and Donaldson ranked in the bottom third of the league in terms of xwOBA. The track record should mostly outweigh his recent disappointment, but Donaldson is heading into his age-37 season and the bounce-back may not be to the extent some expect. At one point considered something of an ironman, Donaldson now seems likely to miss time at some point. He could also get more frequent days off even when healthy.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Drawing interest from Milwaukee
Milwaukee is showing free-agent interest in Donaldson, who is recovering from a calf injury, per Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
Donaldson was released by the Yankees earlier this week and the Brewers would only have to pay him a prorated total of the MLB minimum salary to help at third base down the stretch. He hasn't played in a major-league game since mid-May but was said to be nearing a minor-league rehab assignment just before New York cut him loose. Andruw Monasterio, the Brewers' current primary third baseman, is slashing .211/.290/.300 over his last 100 plate appearances dating back to the beginning of August.
