Elects free agency
Martinez (knee/back) declined an outright assignment to Triple-A Syracuse on Friday and elected free agency.
ANALYSIS
Martinez missed the entire season while dealing with knee, shoulder and back issues. He hopes to play winter ball this offseason, which could help him secure a contract, but he might be stuck looking for a minor-league deal given that he's 33 years old and owns a .251/.325/.386 slash line since the start of 2019, which isn't nearly good enough for a player who provides very little defensive value.

A trade to Chicago at the end of August didn't work out for the Cubs or Martinez. In 21 at-bats with his new team, the veteran went hitless, and he was left off the roster for the Wild Card round loss to the Marlins. Before the trade, Martinez posted a .239/.329/.388 slash line in 24 games with the Rays. The 32-year-old has always been most valuable against left-handed pitchers (as evidenced by his career .915 OPS in those matchups), but he posted only a .566 OPS against lefties in 2020. Martinez is not known for his defensive prowess in the outfield or at first base, so he has to perform at the plate to keep any semblance of a regular role. The Mets signed him to a split contract that will pay him $1 million if he makes the MLB roster, so he will need a strong showing this spring plus the NL retaining the DH.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
To mostly serve as DH
Martinez, who was traded to the Rays from the Cardinals on Thursday, is projected to spend the majority of his time this coming season at designated hitter, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Martinez is the most established big-league name involved in the transaction, and now that he's made the move to an American League club, he finally gets a chance to focus solely on the most prominent aspect of his skill set. Martinez struggled at times while primarily manning first base and right field during his St. Louis tenure, which forced the team at times to put up with shaky defense in order to keep the 31-year-old's bat in the lineup. The Rays won't be encumbered with such decisions except in road interleague contests this coming season, with the team especially high on utilizing Martinez versus left-handed pitching due to his career .976 OPS versus southpaws.
