Steps away from baseball
Mercer announced Tuesday via his personal Twitter account that he has retired from professional baseball.
ANALYSIS
Considering he turned 35 years old in August and didn't land an invitation to a big-league camp during the offseason, Mercer's decision to retire doesn't come as a major surprise. Mercer spent parts of 10 seasons in the majors with the Pirates, Tigers, Yankees and Nationals, compiling a .256/.315/.386 slash line and 66 home runs over 950 career games.

The Tigers signed Mercer to play shortstop because they wanted at least some of the groundballs induced by their pitchers to be outs. Unfortunately, the injury woes that started to creep in the previous season festered this past campaign, becoming recurring quad issues. Mercer missed nearly 10 weeks between a pair of IL stints. When on the field, he recorded his best season since 2013, setting a new personal best with a .438 slugging percentage. After getting a glimpse of Willi Castro in September, Detroit has decided to move on from Mercer, making him a free agent. Despite his reputation, Mercer's defensive runs saved have been poor for the past several seasons, but he could still be able to latch on as an infield reserve capable of filling in at all positions. This could be enough to serve as back-end roster filler in single-league formats. Mixed leaguers need not apply.
