Jonatan Clase

Jonatan Clase

22-Year-Old OutfielderOF
Toronto Blue Jays
2025 Fantasy Outlook
The headline prospect Seattle sent to Toronto at the deadline in exchange for a couple months of Yimi Garcia, Clase fits better on a rebuilding team than a contending team due to his lack of high-end reads in the outfield and an approach at the plate that needs refinement. However, the switch hitter has 99th percentile sprint speed and 219 steals on 267 attempts (82% success rate) in 407 minor-league games. He's unlikely to ever hit 20-plus homers in a season, but Clase has 12 homers and a .439 slugging percentage in 94 Triple-A games, so he's not a zero in the power department. He doesn't turn 23 until late May, so he's ahead of schedule and should still be getting better on both sides of the ball. Clase has a chance to really move the needle in rotisserie leagues as a rookie, even if he's only playing regularly for a six or eight-week stretch, due to his ability to rack up steals in short stretches. He's got the upside to do so without tanking your team's power or batting average. Read Past Outlooks

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2021
Clase was middling at the plate as a 21-year-old at Double-A, logging a 67.3 percent contact rate and .222 batting average to go along with 13 home runs and 62 steals in 108 games. His .331 on-base percentage and the resulting havoc he caused on the bases allowed the switch hitter to still impact the game regularly, despite being a below league average hitter (94 wRC+), and his speed will be the key to him being an impactful fantasy outfielder. Clase has 70-grade speed and likes to run, so that will always define his fantasy relevance. He came into the year with 33 home runs in 236 games above rookie ball, and it will be tough for him to hit more than 15 in a MLB season while playing half his games in Seattle. Clase has two minor-league option years remaining and was summoned from Triple-A early in 2024 after showing improved plate skills. If he is playing regularly, his speed makes him worthy of a flyer in roto leagues.
Clase had an impressive pro debut as a 17-year-old in the Dominican Summer League in 2019, hitting .300/.434/.444 (147 wRC+) with two home runs and 31 steals (on 41 attempts) in 63 games. He was dealing with an undisclosed injury during most of the fall instructional league in 2020, but the Mariners say he was able to hit and that his hit tool and power appear to be real. That power is a new and important development. Clase, who was listed at 5-foot-8, 150 pounds when he signed in 2018, was listed at 6-foot, 200 pounds at instructs. He is the fastest player in Seattle's farm system (at least a plus runner), and now it seems that Clase is has a chance to be a five-category fantasy contributor. Since we're still awaiting his official stateside debut, it's hard to say exactly where his offensive skills are now, but he has the physical tools to jump 100 spots on the prospect rankings this season.

Up on taxi squad

Clase is with the Mariners as a member of the taxi squad for Sunday's game against the Orioles, reports Daniel Kramer of MLB.com.
ANALYSIS
The 21-year-old could be added to the active roster in the coming days, but for now he'll serve as emergency outfield depth. Clase posted a .509 OPS in nine games while up with the Mariners in April, though he has an .878 OPS through 28 contests with Triple-A Tacoma this year.
