Gant has transitioned from a swingman to a full-time arm out of the Cardinals' bullpen. In 81 relief appearances since 2019, he has posted a 3.43 ERA across 81.1 innings. In addition to the strong surface-level ability to prevent runs, Gant's skills have taken a positive turn since his switch to relief. That reached a peak in the shortened 2020 campaign, when he notched a career-best 12.9% swinging-strike rate that translated to a 29.5% strikeout rate -- nearly nine percent greater than his career average. While Gant's jump in skills was encouraging, the sample size was limited to only 15 innings due to a groin injury that curtailed his campaign. Perhaps more importantly, Gant has little realistic chance of reaching the closer role so long as he shares a bullpen with Giovanny Gallegos and Jordan Hicks.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Likely remaining in rotation
Gant should be a regular member of Minnesota's starting rotation going forward now that Kenta Maeda (forearm) is on the injured list.
ANALYSIS
The righty's first seven appearances with the Twins were out of the bullpen before he made his first post-trade start Thursday. Gant has pitched 12 innings with Minnesota, posting a 6.00 ERA and 17:3 K:BB while allowing 11 hits. Injures to Lewis Thorpe (shoulder), Michael Pineda (oblique) and now Maeda have left a massive void in the rotation, presumably locking Gant into a starting role for the time being. His Thursday start was not a particularly good one, as he allowed four runs and took the loss in 3.1 innings, but Gant's ability to eat innings is good enough for the last-place Twins as they work through the last month-plus of the season.
