The Tigers released Rizzo on Tuesday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Rizzo was traded to Detroit from Miami in June, and he has since slashed .299/.358/.518 with six homers and 28 RBI in 151 plate appearances at Triple-A Toledo. Despite his impressive run, Rizzo will now enter the open market and should be able to latch on with another team fairly easily.

2017 Fantasy Outlook
At 5-foot-10, Rizzo lacks the height of a prototypical third baseman, but he has all of the other requisite ingredients to stick there long term. Possessing a powerful left-handed swing, he was given an over-slot $1.75 million bonus after going to the Mariners in the second round of the 2016 draft. He still hasn't fully tapped into his home run potential in games, but he also won't turn 19 until Mar. 31. He has an above-average eye at the dish (10.1 percent walk rate), which led to him performing as an above league average hitter (112 wRC+) in the Arizona League. He didn't drive the ball much over that span, but the M's are hopeful his power stroke will come around. The key will be Rizzo's hit tool, which some evaluators think could be a plus tool for the compact third baseman. His 21.3 percent strikeout rate was fine, but it is high enough to wonder how much contact he will make in 2017 when he makes his full-season debut.

Could be left unprotected
3BSeattle Mariners
October 11, 2020
Rizzo could be left off the 40-man roster and unprotected from the Rule 5 draft this offseason, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Rizzo, a corner infield prospect for the Mariners, hit .295/.354/.423 in 129 games at High-A Modesto. Not rated highly in the Mariners' minor-league system, Rizzo was not invited to the alternate training site for the 2020 season but is currently playing in the Arizona instructional League. Divish noted that the acquisition of Ty France complicates Rizzo's path to the major leagues, causing speculation that he may not be protected from the Rule 5 draft.
