Joe McCarthy

The Rays constantly churn out corner bats when they get even a little pricey, so it can be difficult to keep track of the organizational depth chart. McCarthy should enter that mix at some point this season. He missed over half of 2018 with a back injury, but when healthy he played left field, center field and first base for Triple-A Durham. His 151 wRC+ would have led all International League hitters if he had enough PA to qualify. The Rays liked McCarthy enough to give him a 40-man roster spot this offseason -- a legitimate nod of approval from an organization loaded with talent at every level. The left-handed hitter showed pronounced splits in 2018, posting an .844 OPS against RHP and a .754 OPS against LHP. His splits weren't as bad in 2017, but his OPS was over 300 points better against RHP than against LHP in 2016, so this is a good indicator of the role the platoon-happy Rays have in mind for him. He will be better in OBP leagues (13.1 BB% at Triple-A).
