Past Fantasy Outlooks
2019
2018
2017
2016
Ortiz followed up a dominant 2017 (185 wRC+ in the New York-Penn League) with a wholly underwhelming 2018 -- and now the warts are really starting to show. Nobody questions Ortiz's raw power (at least 70-grade), but as a 6-foot-3, 240-pound corner bat who just turned 20 this offseason, the offensive profile needs to be pretty spotless, considering he will likely slide all the way down the defensive spectrum at some point (he played right field in 2018). Unfortunately, he had a career-worst 32.6 K% and a horrific 29.5% infield-flyball rate -- the worst IFFB% in MLB last year was 19.2% (Mike Moustakas). Ortiz is still very young and has a ton of pedigree (received $4.2 million on July 2, 2015), so it is too early to give up on him completely. However, unlike the typical young hitter, we are just as worried about Ortiz's body as we are about his performance, as the offensive bar for him to clear would be extremely high if he ends up as a R/R first baseman.
