Jesus Sucre

After serving as organizational catching depth for the Mariners over the past six seasons, Sucre beat out Luke Maile and Curt Casali for Tampa Bay's backup catching job out of spring training. Sucre served as the backup to Derek Norris to start the year, but after outperforming Norris both offensively and defensively, he stuck around as the team's No. 2 backstop once starting catcher Wilson Ramos returned from the disabled list. The 29-year-old wound up playing in a career-high 69 games, finishing the season with a .256/.289/.409 line, seven homers and 29 RBI in 192 plate appearances -- the best numbers of his career in any season with more than 10 appearances. He's expected to slot in behind Ramos as the Rays' backup catcher; with Ramos entering the season healthy, Sucre figures to see a similarly light workload in 2018.

After years of showing ineptitude against upper-level pitching, Sucre was banished to another season of organizational catching depth for the Mariners. Things started out inauspiciously, as he broke his leg during the offseason and underwent surgery that held him out for much of the 2016 campaign. Once he recovered and began his tenure with Triple-A Tacoma, the 28-year-old showed some signs of life by batting .273 while striking out just 14.4 percent of the time, although these improvements are mostly nullified given that he's older than many of the players still in the minor leagues. He got a few at-bats in the major leagues and held his own surprisingly well, going 12-for-25 with two doubles and a home run. This production was likely just an anomaly given his ridiculously high .579 BABIP. With the Mariners trading him to the Rays over the offseason, Sucre appears to be destined for an organizational depth role with Curt Casali and Luke Maile competing for playing time until Wilson Ramos is ready for action.

Sucre usually functions as an emergency catcher stashed at Triple-A, but last year he was pressed into everyday duty when Mike Zunino was demoted late in the season. He is a decent receiver but absolutely can't hit a lick -- he had the lowest average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage of any major leaguer with at least 140 plate appearances last season. He'll be back at Triple-A this season as the Mariners stocked their catching corps in the offseason with Chris Iannetta and Steve Clevenger, affording Zunino an opportunity to return to the minors and learn how to hit.

Sucre was called up last July to replace John Buck as the backup to Mike Zunino. Sucre is pretty much a zero at the plate – in 64 plate appearances last season he failed to draw a walk and struck out in 26.6% of his plate appearances. He's a decent catcher, but the Mariners likely will sign a free agent backup, sending Sucre back to Triple-A Tacoma.

Sucre served as a placeholder for the Mariners last season between the demotion of Jesus Montero and the promotion of Mike Zunino. In his short stay he managed to suffer a hand injury and never made it back to the big leagues. Sucre is a decent catcher, but he has no bat. The Mariners likely will sign a backup catcher, giving Sucre little shot at making the roster. He will likely be sent to Triple-A Tacoma as insurance in case injuries strike the catching corps this season.
