Hits open market
Sucre officially elected free agency Tuesday, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 31-year-old cracked the Orioles' Opening Day roster as a second catcher but appeared in only 21 contests for the big club before being outrighted to Triple-A Norfolk in late April. He'll likely have to settle for a minor-league deal as he heads to the open market this winter.

Sucre began the 2018 season as the Rays' No. 2 catcher behind Wilson Ramos, but due to injuries and Ramos being traded, ended up appearing in a career-high 73 games (52 starts). The 30-year-old likely would have seen more opportunities, but his abysmal .209/.247/.253 slash line led Tampa Bay to spread out playing time behind the plate. Sucre was removed from the 40-man roster in November and it's rather difficult to see him working his way back on, as the Rays have younger options -- Michael Perez and Nick Ciuffo -- to back up Mike Zunino. Whether he remains with Tampa Bay or ends up elsewhere, the best-case scenario for Sucre is likely a backup role due to his defensive capabilities. Otherwise, he seems destined to provide catching depth in the minors to start the year.
