The Angels selected Oliva in the second round of the minor-league phase of the Rule 5 draft last week, Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old outfielder was once a promising outfield prospect in the Pittsburgh system, but the Pirates booted him off the 40-man roster last March after he struggled mightily at the dish during his abbreviated stints at the big-league level in 2020 and 2021. He played exclusively at Triple-A Indianapolis in 2022, slashing .266/.324/.429 with eight home runs and 21 stolen bases across 349 plate appearances.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2021
2020
Despite the chaos of last season, Oliva still made his big-league debut as expected, although the promotion amounted to little more than a cup of coffee in September. The 25-year-old stole his first base in the majors and swiped more than 30 in the minors in 2018 and 2019, and speed remains his calling card as he looks to win a starting job in training camp. Oliva has flashed a good batting eye in the minors, and he's got the frame and athleticism to add in-game power with some swing adjustments. His main competition in left field is likely to come from former Blue Jays farmhand Anthony Alford, but Oliva appears to be the better option both from a real-life and a fantasy perspective. Starling Marte is the only Pittsburgh player to record 20 SBs in a season since 2015, and Jarrod Dyson led the club with only four steals last year, but Oliva seems positioned to end that organizational drought.
Oliva, a plus runner, has averaged 34.5 steals (79.3% success rate) over the past two seasons and is a few good months at Triple-A away from the majors, so he is relevant in dynasty and redraft leagues. His numbers at High-A and Double-A were almost identical -- he looks like a good, not great, hitter with little power, big-time speed and a solid handle of the strike zone. That's mostly true, but he shows off 55-grade pull-side power in batting practice, so he could hit double-digit home runs over a full MLB season. Prospectors have been aware of Oliva for years, but a big Arizona Fall League performance was his coming out party. He hit .312/.413/.473 with a 19:14 K:BB and easily paced the AFL with 11 steals on 12 tries in 26 games. After playing in pitcher-friendly parks for the last two years, he was finally in a hitter's haven and it showed. With Pittsburgh rebuilding, Oliva should get a look this year.
