Retires following World Series
Kennedy retired following the World Series on Wednesday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
Kennedy ended the season on the injured list with a shoulder injury, and he opted to retire immediately after winning his first World Series with the Rangers. He pitched in 17 seasons at the big-league level and had strong runs of success as a starter as a member of the Diamondbacks, Padres and Royals before shifting to the bullpen later in his career.

Kennedy actually pitched pretty well for most of last season with the Diamondbacks, carrying a 3.19 ERA and 39:17 K:BB over 42.1 innings through the end of August. The wheels then completely fell off in September, when the veteran right-hander posted a 16.88 ERA and 3.00 WHIP across 10 appearances. Over the offseason Kennedy signed a minor-league deal with Texas, where he enjoyed plenty of success as the Rangers' closer in the first half of the 2021 season. He'll theoretically compete for the closer job again, but at 38 and coming off a dreadful finish to the previous season, Kennedy isn't even guaranteed a roster spot.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Option for late innings?
Rangers GM Chris Young mentioned Kennedy's "experience" as a closer when recently discussing the club's options for the ninth inning, reports Levi Weaver of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
Some of that experience came with the Rangers in 2021, when he recorded 16 saves with a 2.51 ERA before being traded to the Phillies. The veteran right-hander spent last season with Arizona and had 10 saves, though he was unable to stick in the closer role with a 5.46 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 44:22 K:BB across 50.1 innings. Kennedy rejoined Texas for 2023 on a minor-league deal, and he could again be a late-inning option if able to rebound from last year's struggles. However, he'll first need to earn a spot on the MLB roster before potentially challenging the frontrunner for the closer role, Jose Leclerc.
