Two major injuries, including right-knee surgery, has derailed Ramos' development. He played just six games in April 2015 before the knee injury surfaced; he returned later in the year, but was put back on the DL in mid-August, finishing with just 37 non-rehab games. His raw physical skills have begun to transform into baseball skills, but the injuries are slowing that development. His body has changed from lanky to more thick since entering the system. He'll be back at Portland and hopes to stay healthy enough and perform well enough to get to Pawtucket.
In 2013, Ramos started to show some of the power potential scouts saw in him when the he was signed by the Red Sox in 2010. He's a switch-hitter with an athletic frame that's beginning to fill out. At this stage, he has a combination of power and speed while progressing defensively. His plate approach will be tested at Double-A Portland in 2014, but he appears to be progressing and adjusting the more he learns and sees at each level.
Ramos is a converted soccer player with a powerful and athletic frame, but is raw in all facets of baseball. He's taken to the instruction and has shown bat speed with raw power. Harnessing all of that will be a goal in 2012, though he still needs to develop a plan at the plate and become more comfortable facing pitchers. Overall, he just needs to slow the game down, particularly defensively, where he tends to rush the play. We look for him to return to Low-A Greenville.
Ramos, 18, started in Boston's entry in the Gulf Coast League before getting a small taste at Short-Season Lowell in 2010. He's very raw at the plate, and likely will get more instruction (extended spring training) in 2011, before getting exposure to advanced pitching. Making better contact is the first need for 2011. After that, he can learn to hit for more power. Look for him to resurface at Lowell when they open the season in June.
