Castro signed a contract with the Toros de Tijuana of the Mexican Baseball League on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
The six-year major-league veteran spent last season with the Rockies, slashing just .252/.275/.314. Castro, 30, is a career .278 hitter and can play all over the field, but that evidently wasn't enough to garner much interest from big-league clubs.

Castro is the type of player who is more valuable in real life than he is in fantasy. He played in 120 games for the Tigers in 2022 and appeared at six defensive positions, though the club opted not to tender him a contract for 2023. Castro also batted a solid .271, which was actually the lowest mark of his five-year MLB career, as he's developed into a consistent contact hitter who has batted .300 or better twice. However, only 30 of Castro's 114 hits went for extra bases, and he produced a meager 47 RBI. Castro also failed to steal a base, and his lack of power or speed limits his fantasy appeal. All in all, Castro is a solid utility player who would boost plenty of MLB rosters, but contact hitters who don't steal bases don't move the needle much in fantasy leagues. Entering his age-29 season, Castro will have some productive moments, though there are certainly higher-upside options available.
Castro is expected to see most of his work this season as a backup infielder, though his experience at all three outfield spots gives him an added layer of versatility. When given regular playing time, Castro has shown the ability to hit for contact at a high rate (.291 lifetime average, 22.2 percent strikeout rate), but a lack of power and speed limits his fantasy intrigue.
Castro put 38 balls in play in 54 PA for the Tigers in 2020 and managed a single barrel by Statcast's definition. Regardless, Castro hit .347. He reached that mark on the strength of a 20.4 K%, and it was buoyed by a .447 BABIP. The fact that the Tigers have not given Castro a long look tells us all we really need to know; they view him as a utility piece and have not felt the need to give him more at-bats even while in full-blown evaluation mode. Castro spent some time on the injured list last season with a hamstring issue and is now 27 years old with a .318 OBP and .387 SLG in 125 games in the major leagues.
Castro received his first extended look in the big leagues last season and placed second on Detroit with a .291 average in 354 at-bats. That number should be taken with a grain of salt, however, as his paltry 79 wRC+ and .283 xwOBA form a more accurate view of his ability at the plate. Castro registered an absurd .367 BABIP that is almost certainly unsustainable given his 39.6% hard-hit rate and 86.3 mph average exit velocity. In addition, he was among the worst players in the league at drawing a walk as his 2.4 BB% ranked dead last among hitters with 200 or more plate appearances. For a player with almost no power, Castro also strikes out too often, logging a 23.3 K% last season. Castro played seven different defensive positions in 2019, giving him added real-life value, but his lack of any above-average offensive skill should keep him firmly entrenched on the waiver wire in fantasy leagues next season.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could see more time at third
2BDetroit Tigers
June 6, 2022
Castro is the likely choice to fill in at third if Jeimer Candelario's shoulder injury requires a stint on the injured list.
ANALYSIS
Castro is the only Tiger other than Candelario to appear at the hot corner in a game this season. The versatile 28-year-old has appeared at every position, including pitcher, other than catcher and right field but could see concentrated time at third base if Candelario requires a stint on the injured list. Detroit next plays on Tuesday and a roster decision regarding Candelario will likely be made in advance of their game against the Pirates.
