2025 Projections
Likely done with baseball
Garcia told AJ Cassavell of MLB.com on Sunday that he chose not to pursue any opportunities in baseball in free agency this winter, likely suggesting that he's opted to move on from the sport.
ANALYSIS
The 32-year-old infielder has technically been a free agent since last May, when he exercised an opt-out clause in his minor-league contract with the Phillies. Garcia likely could have landed a minor-league deal with another organization, but the prospect of spending extended time at the Triple-A level without the promise of a promotion to the majors might not have been too appealing for him at this stage of his career. Assuming Garcia doesn't elect to resume his playing career, he'll retire with a lifetime .245/.354/.339 slash line over 1,303 plate appearances in parts of seven MLB seasons with the Cardinals and Padres.

Garcia is ideally a utility infielder who can ride the bench, pinch hit and play multiple spots around the infield for a club. He had a career high in plate appearances in 2019, but did little with the opportunity, other than use his OBP skills to hit leadoff in 51 games, while hitting ninth in 50 more games. His best chance to reach base is to accept that walk as he has very little thump in the bat. That OBP skill is something the San Diego lineup lacked last year, forcing Garcia into more playing time than he really deserves. He is out of minor-league options, so if Ty France has a great spring, Garcia could be cut from the roster as the talent in San Diego runs fairly deep all of a sudden.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Left off NLDS roster
Garcia wasn't included on the Padres' roster for the NL Division Series against the Dodgers, Bob Scanlan of FOX Sports San Diego reports.
ANALYSIS
Manager Jayce Tingler said leaving Garcia off the roster was one of the hardest choices made during the decision-making process, but the club simply needed more arms given the injuries to starting pitchers and bullpen usage during the NL Wild Card Round. The veteran infielder totaled only 22 at-bats during September, so it's not as though the Padres will need to alter their lineup construction in his absence. Garcia had a .529 OPS in 35 games this season and may not see the field during the playoffs, even if San Diego advances past Los Angeles.
