Power is Deichmann's calling card; he was considered one of the top power hitters in the 2017 draft class. The power he showed at Louisiana Tech has translated through 184 minor-league games to date, but he did not get to add to that games played total in 2020 with the cancellation of the minor-league season, losing precious development time as he pushes close to 26 years old. Deichmann was part of Oakland's 60-player pool and the club clearly liked what it saw since it added Deichmann to the 40-man roster in November. The jury's out as to whether Deichmann will be able to make enough contact to allow his power to play at the major-league level. He should not be viewed as a realistic roster candidate out of camp.
Considered one of the top power hitters from the 2017 draft class, Deichmann has not disappointed in that regard with 26 home runs in his first 184 career games in the minor leagues. His power was also on full display in the Arizona Fall League, where Deichmann crushed nine homers in just 23 games. However, the questions about his hit tool are more prevalent than ever after he fanned 30.3% of the time at Double-A in his age-23/24 season. That was after he posted a 34.1 K% at High-A the season prior, and those nine AFL homers came with 29 strikeouts in only 95 plate appearances. He ran more last season and had a strong 79.2% success rate on the basepaths. He also has a strong throwing arm in right field, but Deichmann's swing-and-miss issues may be too much to overcome and at this point it's a race against time with his 25th birthday approaching.
The A's landed one of the 2017 draft's top power hitters with the 43rd overall pick and an over-slot $1.7 million bonus. Deichmann quickly made good on his reputation, finishing second in the New York-Penn League in ISO (.256), tied for third in wRC+ (171) and tied for third in home runs (eight). His 14.4 percent walk rate and 20.5 percent strikeout rate also stand out as excellent initial marks in pro ball. He displayed an outstanding opposite-field approach (41.9 percent of hits), especially for someone with his power profile. Unfortunately, he turns 23 in May, so it's really hard to read too much into this production until he reaches Double-A or Triple-A. Of course, it's a good sign that he dominated short-season pitching -- it would have been a red flag if he had struggled. He projects as a solid defensive right fielder, at least early in his career. Deichmann may receive an aggressive assignment, skipping Low-A and going straight to High-A in 2018.
