25-Year-Old PitcherSP
Chicago White Sox
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Crochet missed all of 2022 following Tommy John surgery and was limited to just 25 apperances between the majors and minors last season due to a shoulder injury. When healthy, the lefty walked more batters (13) at the big league level last year than he struck out (12), but the sample was limited to only 12.2 innings. He ended the season healthy, but the Crochet's persistent injury woes have made it difficult for the White Sox to settle on his role. Recent reports indicate his workload will be monitored during spring training and Chicago will determine whether to stretch him out to start in 2024, or use him in relief. Fantasy managers have been willing to gamble on Crochet's upside for a few years now, but he has yet to realize his potential. If health prevails in 2024, Crochet could re-emerge on fantasy radars, but expect a high WHIP no matter what role he fills. Read Past Outlooks

Crochet didn't factor into the decision Friday against Detroit, allowing four hits and a walk over four scoreless innings. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Crochet's workload decreased dramatically down the stretch, though he was still impressive in limited work, allowing just one run over 12 innings in his final three outings. It was a breakthrough season overall for the left-hander, who proved to be one of the White Sox's few bright spots. Crochet will finish the year at 6-12 with a 3.58 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 209:33 K:BB across 146 innings.

How does Garrett Crochet compare to other starting pitchers?
This section compares his stats with all starting pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 120 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 120 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2021
Crochet missed all of 2022 while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. The White Sox hope he'll return by mid-season. Before the surgery, the plan was for Crochet to follow Michael Kopech's example and begin the season as a multi-inning reliever before joining the rotation. The White Sox still envision Crochet as a starter, but there are no plans to work in that capacity in 2023. The hope is he builds up ample innings to make the full transition in the off-season. Still just 23-years-old, there is plenty of time for Crochet to make it as a starter, but with his arsenal, high-leverage relief work is a solid fallback. It's risky to trust Crochet in redraft leagues, but he could be a target to stash in keeper formats.
Crochet clearly has the talent to be an oft-utilized, high-leverage reliever, but the White Sox played it safe with the young hurler in 2021, limiting him to just 54.1 innings that typically came in middle relief. Chicago conserved his arm, particularly towards the end of last season, as the team still views him as a starter long-term. Crochet did spend one minimum-length stay on the IL due to a back strain and also dealt with a blister early in the season, but he remained healthy for the most part and was an important piece of the White Sox pen. The southpaw posted a solid 2.82 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 10.8 K/9 with three wins, 12 holds and promising Statcast metrics across the board. While Crochet showed promise across his limited sample last year, he opted for Tommy John surgery in April and will miss the entire 2022 season and a sizable portion of the 2023 campaign.
Crochet was impressive during the 2020 regular season, firing six scoreless frames in five relief appearances. He posted a 0.50 WHIP and struck out eight without walking a batter over that brief stretch. The young lefty did suffer a forearm injury in the postseason, but he's on track to enter the 2021 campaign with a clean bill of health. Crochet features an electric fastball that typically sits around triple digits, and he's working to develop both a slider (86.7 mph average) and changeup (92.5 mph average). He was used in a relief role a season ago, but the White Sox still view Crochet as a starter in the long term and may send him down to Triple-A Charlotte in 2021 to continue his development as a rotation piece.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Willing to sign contract extension
PChicago White Sox
November 12, 2024
The White Sox could receive bigger trade proposals from teams interested in Crochet considering the pitcher is willing to sign a long-term contract extension, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Crochet is under team control through 2026 and will be very affordable in arbitration because he's either been a reliever or injured for much of his career. That, in addition to his stellar performance in 2024 -- a 3.58 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 209:33 K:BB across 146 innings -- means he will draw broad trade interest regardless, but the fact he's amenable to a long-term deal surely appeals to some clubs.
