2025 Fantasy Outlook
Carter's arrow was pointing firmly up at this time last year. He flourished during a late-season promotion to the Rangers and kept that up during the playoffs as the Rangers rolled to a World Series title. Unfortunately, the 2024 campaign wound up being a lost one for the youngster. Carter had dealt with back problems off and on since entering pro ball and last year didn't play in a game after late May because of a lower-back stress reaction. He eventually underwent an ablation procedure, which he and the Rangers hope allow him to finally put the nagging issues behind him. Carter's numbers when on the field in 2024 were dreadful, but it's tempting to completely throw them out the window since he was never healthy. The left-handed batter hasn't hit southpaws in the majors or minors, so a strong-side platoon could await him in 2025. However, that and the injury concerns figure to make the draft-day cost minimal, and the skills that made Carter a top prospect remain. Read Past Outlooks

Cleared to swing bat

Back
November 26, 2024
Carter (back) has been swinging a bat and is expected to be 100 percent for the start of spring training, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
Carter was limited to just 45 games this season due to a nagging back problem and underwent an ablation procedure in October to remove tissue from his back. The expectation is that he'll be without restrictions once spring training rolls around. The 22-year-old posted just a .633 OPS over 162 plate appearances in 2024 but should enter 2025 with a regular role for the Rangers.

This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
The back of Carter's baseball card looks pristine and he shined on a big postseason stage, but there is one glaring weakness to acknowledge: his inability to hit lefties. He should be a fantastic option near the top of the lineup against righties and has the speed to steal 20-plus bases. Carter's hard-hit data is middling, especially for a top prospect who is big-league ready. However, he is a master at getting the barrel to the ball and taking opposite-handed pitchers out to the pull side. Carter's 13.4 O-Swing% was incredibly low, especially for a rookie hitter who also slugged .645 in 75 MLB plate appearances. For now, he is a premium platoon prospect. He went hitless with one walk and six strikeouts in 11 plate appearances against big-league lefties and notched one extra-base hit (a double) while striking out 28 times in 106 plate appearances against southpaws at Double-A and Triple-A. The Rangers are loaded, so Carter may platoon, but he could still go 15/20 with a high OBP and won't turn 22 until August.
Carter, whom the Rangers selected with the 50th overall pick in 2020, finally got to play nearly a full minor-league season and proved himself to be one of the game's top outfield prospects in the process. A stress fracture in his back limited him to 32 games at Single-A in 2021, but his approach as an 18-year-old (.438 OBP, 34 walks, 28 strikeouts) jumped out as a strength. Carter followed that up with a .295/.397/.489 slash line, 17.1 K% and 13.5 BB% while playing 100 games at High-A and six games at Double-A. He hit 12 home runs and went 28-for-41 (68.3% success rate) on stolen base attempts while being one of the youngest hitters at each stop. Carter clearly projects as a leadoff hitter down the road, it's just a matter of projecting how much power he will develop and how many bases he will steal annually. His 28.6 Hard% was fine for a player his age (turned 20 in August) with his plate skills, but that success rate on the bases is a bit discouraging. There's 15-homer/20-steal upside for now, but Carter still has room to improve or regress in the next couple years as he faces better pitching.

Demotion not yet considered
OFTexas Rangers
May 27, 2024
Rangers manager Bruce Bochy indicated Friday that he has yet to think about a potential demotion for Carter, reports Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News.
ANALYSIS
Carter had a solid start to his MLB career by hitting .306 in 23 games last year and finished April with five homers and a .776 OPS, but he's batting just .132 in May and is without a hit in his past 20 at-bats. The 21-year-old already isn't seeing starts against left-handed pitching, and more time on the bench isn't a solution for a prized prospect. A trip to the minors could be in store if Carter's struggles continue to linger, but for now it appears he'll continue to serve as Texas' primary left fielder versus right-handed pitching.
