2025 Projections
Placed on 45-day injured list
Volquez was placed on the 45-day injured list Thursday with a right oblique strain.
ANALYSIS
Volquez was relatively effective out of the Rangers' bullpen to begin the season, but he should miss the rest of the regular season as a result of his oblique injury. It's certainly a devastating blow for the 37-year-old, who also missed most of the 2019 campaign with an elbow injury. He had initially intended to retire following the 2019 season, so it's safe to wonder if Volquez will take the mound in the majors again.

Volquez, who signed a two-year contract with the Rangers before the 2018 campaign, missed the entire season while working his way back from Tommy John surgery. He's expected to be fully healthy entering spring training, and the veteran figures to have the inside track on an Opening Day rotation spot after being added to the team's 40-man roster in November. Volquez last pitched in the majors in 2017, posting a 4.19 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, 7.9 K/9 and 5.2 BB/9 across 92.1 innings (17 starts) with the Marlins. Volquez will be 35 years old entering the season, the right-hander has always offered limited upside (career 4.42 ERA, 7.7 K/9). Remember too that his new home stadium is one of the worst for pitchers.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Considering 2020 return
Volquez said that if he's going to pitch in 2020, it'd probably only happen if he were with the Rangers, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
Volquez, who underwent Tommy John surgery in 2017 and sustained an elbow strain earlier in 2019, may still find interest from other teams who want to take the chance that he recaptures his strikeout abilities in the bullpen. The 36-year-old has a 5.27 ERA in 13.2 innings, but his velocity jump as a reliever could help him land a low-leverage gig with the possible side benefit of him benefiting younger pitchers.
