Dylan Covey

It's hard to fathom Covey getting another chance in the rotation after going 0-7 with a 7.71 ERA, but here we are. The dearth of capable arms on the south side of Chicago will likely afford him an opportunity to compete for a starting role in spring training. The peripherals suggest Covey deserved better last season, but not much better as he had just a dismal 2.3 K-BB percentage and 2.57 HR/9 (7.20 FIP, 5.54 xFIP, 5.64 SIERA). Covey turned in just a 6.2 percent swinging-strike rate and 55.7 percent first-pitch strike rate, so there is little reason to believe his K-rate will improve moving forward. A rebuilding team like the White Sox needs arms to just get them through the season, but you still have to appease the fanbase to some extent. The team would be wise to bring in a couple veterans at the minimum to eat innings, pushing Covey to the bullpen.
