Lands minor-league deal with Texas
Peters agreed to a minor-league contract with the Rangers on Wednesday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old was a well-regarded outfield prospect while he made his ascent through the Dodgers organization after entering the professional ranks in 2016, but he managed a lowly .197/.242/.422 slash line over 240 plate appearances during his lone season in the majors in 2021, which he split between the Dodgers and Rangers. He eventually moved on to the Korea Baseball Organization in 2022, only to return to affiliated ball in 2023 while making the conversion to pitching. He had a rough go in rookie ball last season with the Tigers' Florida Complex League affiliate, turning in a 6.23 ERA and 24:27 K:BB over 21.2 innings. Though Peters' initial results as a pitcher at the lowest rung of the minors weren't encouraging, the Rangers will bring him back for a second stint in the organization and see if they can unlock some of his potential on the mound.

Once again, Peters hit for power, struck out a lot (31.0 K%) and was at least 12% better than the average hitter in the leagues he played in, but his most widely-accepted strength disappeared. The right-handed slugger stopped crushing lefties. After posting an OPS of .900 or better against southpaws from 2016-18, Peters had a .707 OPS in 112 PA against lefties. His floor was seemingly a short-side platoon right fielder, so the question is whether he made adjustments to try to solve his issues against righties at the expense of his greatest strength, or whether he just got very unlucky in a small sample against southpaws. If the .838 OPS he posted against righties is legitimate and he bounces back against LHP, then he could be in for a monster 2020 in the Pacific Coast League. He is on the 40-man roster, but does not have a clear path to an everyday role, barring a trade to a lesser organization.
