ANALYSIS
The 30-year-old lefty will presumably have to settle for a minor-league deal in free agency this winter. He logged 22 appearances (four starts) for Pittsburgh in 2022, submitting a 4.58 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 26:17 K:BB in 39.1 innings.

Peters ended 2021 on the injured list with a strained lower back, but he's ready to go early in spring training for Pittsburgh. The 29-year-old was acquired by the Pirates at the trade deadline last year and pitched reasonably well in six starts with a 3.71 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 23:10 K:BB across 26.2 frames. However, his 4.48 xERA, 4.54 xFIP and career 1.57 WHIP don't paint a pretty picture. He's a strong bet to begin 2022 in the starting rotation, as he is out of minor-league options, but he could be transitioned into a relief role or designated for assignment if he struggles.
Had baseball not effectively legislated out the LOOGY role, Peters could easily fill that role now and stick around the majors for longer than his current projected path. Peters has a tremendous high-spin curveball that lefties hit .143 against in 2019, and overall, he holds his own against lefties. The problems arise when anyone hitting righty steps out of the dugout as Peters has been incredibly hittable. Righties have enjoyed a career .293/.364/.550 line against him in nearly 100 innings of work. Simply put, unless the league goes back to allowing LOOGYs, Peters is not rosterable because he has nothing to keep righties from racing to the bat rack and begging managers to allow them to hit and pad their stats.
Peters has 131 innings of major-league experience under his belt in his time with the Marlins and Angels, but a 5.70 ERA and 1.61 WHIP leave little to write home about. Peters is a lefty who works in the 90-92 mph range with a big loopy curveball, but has struggled with the command of both pitches in his three years at the big-league level. Lefties have a tougher time taking him yard, but righties own a .292/.363/.544 slash line against him and they've hit 22 of the 25 homers he has allowed in his big-league career. If he wants to avoid a permanent assignment to the bullpen, Peters will need to get better with his offspeed pitch or start using a cutter to knock on the front door of hitters. Until that happens, keep him at arm's length.
Opportunity drives fantasy value, and Peters stands a good chance of breaking camp in the Miami rotation, and there are worse things than getting to call Marlins Park home. Peters induced groundballs at a 63.3 percent rate last season, and that led him to a 0.42 HR/9, 3.39 FIP and 3.87 xFIP in 21.1 innings at home. He issued too many free passes in his first exposure to big-league hitters (5.5 BB/9), but Peters' walk rates on the farm in 2016 and 2017 (1.4 BB/9 and 2.4 BB/9, respectively) suggest improvement is likely as he gets acclimated at the highest level. The lefty held same-handed hitters to a .059 average during his time with Double-A Jacksonville and right-handers combined for just a .307 wOBA against him in the majors. He has never reached even 8.0 K/9 above rookie ball, and the lack of strikeouts will limit his upside, but Peters has the makings of a decent home streaming option.
