Turnbow was maddeningly inconsistent during the 2007 season, though he did bounce back somewhat from a terrible finish to 2006. Turnbow will likely be a set-up man to Eric Gagne, but there's been some talk he'll remain in the mix for the closer role. It's doubtful that he would be able to hang onto that job if he did start out with it, so be wary of picking him up as your closer.
Turnbow went from closer to being used only in mop-up duty in the course of one season, finishing with a 6.87 ERA. He struck out 69 in 56.1 innings, but also allowed 39 walks and 56 hits. The Brewers hope to bring him back to his 2005 form and use him as a set-up guy to Francisco Cordero. He's not going to be the closer to start out, but there's always a chance he could return to that role so he's not a terrible late-round or $1 pick.
Turnbow was available before the 2005 season for the Brewers to snag him off waivers, yet ended up being one of the league's best closers. As long as he continues to find the strike zone consistently, he'll be good for 30 to 40 saves. Last year was a career year for him so be a little wary that there will be a falloff in 2006.
Unlike other pitching prospects in the Angels' farm system, strikeouts aren't a problem for Turnbow -- he fanned 63 in 55 Triple-A innings last year and then whiffed 15 in 15.1 with Anaheim. He has a good chance to start the year in Anaheim's bullpen, but we're not getting all tingly for him yet. Don't be afraid to go the extra buck on draft day if he shows progress in spring.
Turnbow has had all sorts of arm problems over the last two seasons. If he even manages to pitch, it will be at Double-A or Triple-A.
