McDonald has been a popular teammate in Boston the last two seasons, though his production dropped off significantly last year after a surprisingly-effective 2010 season. Boston may add a free-agent outfielder in the offseason, but McDonald has a chance to see semi-regular time in right field while Ryan Kalish recovers from shoulder surgery. He's hit lefties well over the past couple of seasons, has a modicum of speed, and has been accepting of a subordinate role with the team at a cheap salary. Keep in mind, however, that job security is a major concern here.
Who knew McDonald would become such an important part of Boston's everyday lineup in 2010? Injuries to Mike Cameron and Jacoby Ellsbury, which turned out to be season-long dramas, afforded McDonald his best opportunity (117 games) at the major league level since his 2004 debut with Baltimore. His offseason thumb surgery is progressing as expected and he'll be ready for spring training. If he returns to Boston, you can bet your salary that he won't start the season as one of the starting three outfielders. Still, the Red Sox like that he can play all three outfield positions and he would be an ideal fit as a fourth or fifth outfielder.
McDonald got playing time in Minnesota's outfield last season after a few injuries and with a dearth of minor league talent in the outfield. He'll try to win a reserve role this spring, but McDonald is more likely to add depth at Triple-A. He stole 30 bases between three teams last season, so his speed could provide fantasy value if he finds playing time.
McDonald began last season like he was heading to Baltimore, but his season ended in June with a shoulder injury that required surgery. The Baltimore outfield will be crowded in 2004, so expect McDonald to start the season at Triple-A Ottawa. He's running out of time.
McDonald played 91 games at Class AAA Rochester, hitting .289 in 332 at-bats with six homers, 35 RBI, 21 doubles and 11 steals. Another season at Triple-A is likely.
